Record Store Day Announces 2022 Releases, Second “Safety Net” Day

86

After two years of staggered Drops dates, Record Store Day will return to its former glory on Saturday, April 23rd, 2022. The celebration of all things vinyl at independent record stores throughout the world has released its official list of all releases hitting stores this spring.

While RSD is finally back to one single day—after three Drops dates in 2020 and two in 2021—organizers understand the limitations still imposed on the manufacturing industry due to COVID. That is why 2022 will feature a “safety net” RSD Drops date on June 18th for any releases intended for the April 23rd celebration that were impacted by shipping delays.

“As we’ve all learned in the past few years, it can be hard to make any plans in permanent ink, so it’s always a good idea to have a sort of contingency plan,” organizers wrote. “A safety net for anything a few months still down the road.”

Peter Gabriel Live Blood — “Recorded at the Hammersmith Apollo, London, 23 & 24 March 2011 and originally released the following year, Live Blood is exactly what its name suggests – the live incarnation of Peter Gabriel’s New Blood project where he reworked a chunk of his back catalogue for a 46-piece orchestra.

“I was determined that it shouldn’t be just a sort of ‘Hits goes to the Orchestra’. So we did two things different: one was to try to choose songs that were more textural, more journey songs, more evocative, ambient pieces and less the obviously structured pop songs, and the second thing we did was, we threw away the rock band; most people when they do orchestral projects keep the rock band and add orchestra, but we took away guitar, we took away bass, we took away drum kit, and in a way that meant that we were more committed and had only to use the colours of the palette of the orchestra.”” Limited to 5,000 copies and set for release on June 18th.

Rory Gallagher Live In San Diego ’74 — “Live In San Diego ’74 is an unreleased live radio concert recovered from the depths of the Rory Gallagher archives. Jazz Sabbath Vol. 2 — “Longtime Black Sabbath/Ozzy Osbourne keys and guitar player Adam Wakeman (as Milton Keanes) is back with Jazz Sabbath Vol. 2.

According to the liner notes, the UK jazz trio Jazz Sabbath were recording two albums in 1969 when disaster struck. Their debut album was cancelled, and their second album shelved; leaving room for a certain band from Birmingham becoming famous by playing metal versions of their jazz songs; claiming they were their own. Jazz Sabbath were powerless to do anything about it.

The discovery of their debut album master tapes and the following re-release of the album in 2020 has changed everything. With the truth finally out there and the Birmingham band exposed as musical charlatans, Milton Keanes and colleagues have reunited and finished recording their second album. This album contains the songs in their original form, replenished with 52 years of experience, vigor… and rage.” Limited to 4,000 copies.

Elton John The Complete Thom Bell Sessions (EP) — “Elton John recorded the Thom Bell Sessions in 1977 but when it was released in 1979, it only featured 3 tracks. Durand Jones & The Indications Power To The People — “”This 45 marks the label’s 100th 45 and what better way to celebrate it than with a 45 from arguably our most prominent artist, Durand Jones & The Indications. This mix of “Power To The People” was the first new recording by the band after their self-titled album had been released. I distinctly remember hearing it for the first time and just feeling like we were hearing the next phase for the guys. I was behind the counter at Plaid Room, with my laptop plugged into the speakers so we could listen. There was no one in the store, just Bob and I. And when it finished playing Bob said, “Where can I pre-order?”” Limited to 1,900 copies.

Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio Live in Loveland! — “This noteworthy live performance, recorded on Record Store Day in 2018 at Plaid Room Records, features songs tracked directly to tape and engineered/mixed by Colemine Records label owner Terry Cole. This show was the first time that the label crew had met the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio in person, and was also the day they were releasing their RSD 2018 release ‘Live At KEXP!’ And now, this whole live set comes full circle, and is available on pink vinyl for RSD 2022! Featuring the band’s original lineup, Live In Loveland documents a momentous record store (and Record Store Day!) occasion.” Limited to 7,500 copies.

Willie Nelson Live At The Texas Opry House, 1974 — “Recorded over the course of two nights in 1974, just a few months after Phases and Stages was released, these early concerts by the newly-minted Willie Nelson Family Band were meant to capture the sound and feel of the burgeoning Outlaw Country scene in Austin, TX. Produced by Jerry Wexler, the album was scrapped at the time and was only released on CD in 1992 and in this complete form in 2006 on the The Complete Atlantic Sessions. This double LP is housed in a deluxe package with an OBI strip, gatefold jacket, printed inner sleeves, original record labels and marble neon color vinyl.” Limited to 4,000 copies.

Prince The Gold Experience — “The Gold Experience was the first full-length Prince album to be credited to his unpronounceable symbol, and was released at the most public, heated stage of his battle with the major label industrial complex. Santana Splendiferous — “Splendiferous is a new 2LP compilation, personally curated by Carlos Santana, showcasing highlights drawn from Santana’s musical output spanning 2003-2019. It focuses on the too-often-underappreciated yet creatively fertile period following Santana’s 1998 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the massive success of the 1999 album Supernatural. In its wake, Santana released a series of remarkable recordings, among them 2003’s Shaman, 2005’s All That I Am and 2014’s Corazón, that stand with the best that Carlos, or his band, have ever made. Many of these songs and performances were overlooked at the time of their release and are being presented anew on Splendiferous, as essential musical elements in the Santana canon.” Limited to 9,350 copies.
