Paul McCartney Pays Tribute To Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins: “A True Rock & Roll Hero”

76

With the music world still reeling from the loss of Taylor Hawkins last week, Paul McCartney offered his own tribute to the late Foo Fighters drummer. The Beatle took to Instagram to remember Hawkins, who passed away at 50 on Friday in Colombia, calling him “a true Rock and Roll hero.”

“Taylor’s sudden death came as a shock to me and the people who knew and loved him,” Macca wrote on social media.⁣ “Not only was he a GREAT drummer but his personality was big and shiny and will be sorely missed by all who were lucky to live and work alongside him.⁣”

McCartney played beside Hawkins and Foo Fighters on a number of occasions, including on the band’s 2017 album Concrete and Gold. The Dave Grohl-fronted rock outfit asked Sir Paul to record an instrument on “Sunday Rain” and, to McCartney’s shock, that instrument was the drums. Even more shocking, “Sunday Rain” was one of Hawkins’ songs.

“This request came from a group with TWO amazing drummers!” McCartney wrote. “It was an incredible session and cemented my relationship with Taylor and the guys.”

At last year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Cleveland, Foo Fighters once again called up McCartney. This time, he inducted the band into the Hall and joined them in a rendition of “Get Back” at the Rock Mortgage Fieldhouse on October 30th.

“Taylor provided a powerhouse drum part,” McCartney recalled. “I’ll never forget that night. All of which made it much more of a desperately sad shock to hear he had died. So thanks Taylor for sharing some glorious minutes with me. You were a true Rock and Roll hero and will always remain in my heart.⁣”

Foo Fighters on Tuesday canceled all upcoming tour dates. The band was in the midst of an extensive world tour that would have kept them on the road throughout much of 2022. “We’re sorry for and share in the disappointment that we won’t be seeing one another as planned,” the band said in a statement. “Instead, let’s take this time to grieve, to heal, to pull our loved ones close, and to appreciate all the music and memories we’ve made together.”
