The Bogie Band ft. Joe Russo celebrated the release of its debut album, The Prophets In The City, at Brooklyn Bowl on Saturday night. The project, a collaboration between saxophonist/composer Stuart Bogie (Antibalas, Arcade Fire) and Joe Russo, features a unique instrumentation of only wind instruments and percussion.

The night began with an opening set from Chris Harford‘s Band of Changes, an aptly named group that features a rotating cast of familiar musicians. This time, the lineup included Joe Russo’s Almost Dead vets Dave Dreiwitz, Scott Metzger, and the man himself, Joe Russo, who played drums and percussion with both bands.

Brooklyn was a fitting location to celebrate the release of The Prophets In The City, an album that deals with the complexities and beauty of life in New York City. The avant-garde concoction of percussion, horns, and woodwinds captures not just the chaos of New York’s bustling streets but also the city’s richness of character.

In a recent interview with Highway 81 Revisited, Bogie shared, “There is a saturation of movement. And the interlocking rhythms of different parts and different musical themes, and by saturation I mean there’s this feeling like you cannot cram anything else in the song.”

The Bogie Band’s next performance will be at The Peach Music Festival in Scranton, PA over Independence Day weekend, while Band of Changes shows will remain rare and elusive in the coming months. Russo, Metzger, and Dreiwitz, however, have a busy schedule of upcoming Joe Russo’s Almost Dead tour dates this spring. For a full list of upcoming JRAD shows, head here.
