Much like the captivating tale of the lost city of Atlantis, the signature Atlantis cologne by Blu Atlas is magical and ahead of its time. The all-natural Atlantis Eau de Parfum is an aromatic, earthy fragrance that bounces between notes of citrus and clean woods. And despite its modernity, the scent is classic and one you can keep coming back to time and time again. Read on for a detailed Blu Atlas Atlantis cologne review below:
Like any good citrus top note, bergamot is sharply tart, balancing fruit notes with warm aromatics and spices. In perfect contrast, middle note clary sage is soft, sweet, and herbaceous. It has a fresh, clean aroma that leans towards lavender and balsamic nuances. Base note patchouli ends the scent parade with its recognizable aroma.
Patchouli (extracted from the leaves of the aromatic, flowering patchouli plant) is less floral and green than it is earthy. Even though it technically is part of the mint family—which likely explains why it pairs so beautifully with other herbaceous notes like clary sage—it has an earthy, grounding scent that makes it a beautiful base note.
Despite its simplicity, the Atlantis trifecta of bergamot, clary sage, and patchouli encompasses the best parts of a citrus, woody, aromatic fragrance. It’s bright when it needs to be bright and warm when it needs to be warm, particularly after it wears on the skin for a few hours. Above all, Atlantis smells like the freshest parts of nature: citruses, herbs, and the clean smell of patchouli’s musk.
Blu Atlas Mission
One of the most defining parts of Blu Atlas isn’t its fragrance but its story and how it fits into the brand’s mission. If you don’t know much about Blu Atlas, it is an all-natural grooming brand that focuses on creating high-quality formulas for every man’s routine.
They do so through high-impact skincare products, hair care, everyday grooming essentials, and (of course) their signature fragrance. Blu Atlas wanted to create an all-natural, premium personal care brand that caters to all of your needs, from shampoo and face wash to deodorant and cologne—minus all the illegible ingredients and questionable chemicals.
Like the rest of Blu Atlas’s products, Atlantis is made entirely of clean, natural ingredients that are scientifically proven and dermatologist tested to be efficacious. They’re free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and artificial fragrances, meaning that the Atlantis parfum comes from the natural fragrance oils of bergamot, clary sage, and patchouli.
This is fantastic if you are someone who tries to stick to “clean” beauty products or are easily irritated by artificial fragrance, but it’s equally amazing for those of us who are just living our life, trying to find products that always work.
Atlantis might not be the first all-natural Eau de parfum to hit the market, and it certainly won’t be the last; but either way, it’s a standout scent from a brand that has reaffirmed the importance of clean, intentional personal care products.
Atlantis is an Eau de parfum (EDP), meaning it contains around 15-20% fragrance oil. After straight perfume (or parfum), an EDP has the highest fragrance concentration, so it contains less alcohol than most cologne reviews we do and has a more pungent, longer-lasting smell than lighter fragrances like an Eau de toilette.
With this in mind, you can expect four to five hours of guaranteed wear from your favorite Eau de parfum, though there is some room for variation. Blu Atlas’ Atlantis falls right in that range, easily lasting five or so hours on the skin.
Can I Layer Atlantis With Other Fragrances?
Atlantis is one of the most layer-friendly colognes on the market. Because it has a simple yet striking fragrance profile, with bergamot at the top, clary sage at the heart, and patchouli rounding out the base, it layers amazingly well with other scents.
It can also be worn underneath other layerable scents like Jo Malone’s Wood Sage & Sea Salt, creating a balanced fragrance that blends sweet, earthy notes with the freshness of the sea. Atlantis pairs equally well under more feminine, vanilla scents like YSL’s Black Opium.
This is likely because of the two scents connected on a base note of patchouli and Black Opium’s freshness from notes of pear, pink pepper, orange blossom, jasmine, and cedarwood added to the warm, earthy aromatics of Atlantis.
Atlantis pairs perfectly with many fragrance profiles and perfumes on the market, so it doesn’t take a lot of trial and error in the art of layering. However, choosing a layering scent that compliments the notes of your base is key to harnessing the height of the fragrance’s versatility.
Below is a primer on what notes pair well with those found in Atlantis. While this isn’t a comprehensive list, it can help you pinpoint notes in your current collection that might layer well with this new cologne.
Starting with bergamot, we know it as a tart, sometimes bitter citrus that has aromatic, lightly floral undertones. It’s a popular cologne top note, so you’ll often see it paired with notes like black and pink pepper, lemon, mandarin, orange, and grapefruit. Bergamot also pairs well with middle notes like clary sage, cypress, geranium, jasmine, nutmeg, and base notes of frankincense, patchouli, sandalwood, and vetiver.
Clary sage is a widely used aromatic; it’s great in colognes and perfumes because it is herbaceous, earthy, and ambery with soft hints of fruit, floral, and tobacco. Given this, it tends to blend best with citrus, floral, herbaceous, and woody fragrances like bergamot, lavender, sandalwood, patchouli, and cedarwood.
And who could forget about patchouli? While some might be hesitant about this well-known fragrance, no one can argue how well it harmonizes with bergamot and clary sage. If you’re interested in layering Atlantis with other fragrances, it’s good to note that patchouli works well with virtually all other scents–it’s partly what makes it so widely loved. Pair it with bright citrus, sweet scents like vanilla, florals like jasmine and rose, or keep it woody and masculine with notes of vetiver, cedarwood, tobacco, and sandalwood.
The versatility of Blu Atlas’s Atlantis is a real win in the world of fragrance when so many other scents lock you down in a box (you’re either fruity, floral, or woody). Atlantis gives you the freedom to be whoever you want to be, whether that’s clean, fresh, and pared-back or varied and layered underneath any fragrance of your choosing.
So is Atlantis the best cologne of 2022? Well, the year still has a while to go, but there’s a high chance this Eau de parfum will stay at the top. If you’re in the market for a new, clean unisex scent that is stunning on its own or layered underneath fragrances you already have in your collection, then yes—Atlantis is a must-buy.
