Format Festival To Debut With RÜFÜS DU SOL, Khruangbin, The War On Drugs, Nile Rogers & Chic, More

First-year festival Format will debut September 23rd–25th in Bentonville, AR with a diverse lineup headed by RÜFÜS DU SOL, Khruangbin, The War On Drugs, Nile Rogers & Chic, and more. The multi-disciplinary festival will occur at the private Sugar Creek Airstrip.

Also slated for the inaugural Format Festival are PhoenixBeach HouseThe Flaming LipsJungle, Herbie Hancock, The Marías, Richie HawtinThundercatFatboy SlimElle KingRobert Glasper, Leftover Salmon, The Comet Is Coming, Christone “Kingfish Ingram”Genesis Owusu, Yussef DayesChali 2na & Cut Chemist, and many more. In addition to the wide variety of musicians, the festival will host visual artists including Doug Aitken, sculptor Nick CaveMarinella Senatore, and many more.

“Format represents a new type of festival, placing visual and performing arts on the same plane as live music, creating a fluid and unified experience,” said Elizabeth Edelman, Mafalda Millies, and Roya Sachs, co-founders of Triadic and creators of Format. “Visitors will encounter large-scale installation art and unconventional venues created by a range of internationally recognized artists, alongside an eclectic roster of musical acts.”

Format will serve as a marriage of music, art, and technology, offering “immersive installations by dynamic visual and performing artists, site-specific commissions, and architectural interventions.” In addition to a pair of main stages, the festival will utilize alternative environments to present live music and light shows, such as forest hideaways, a converted disco barn, multi-room speakeasy, and more. The Sugar Creek Airstrip sits on 250 acres of forest-enclosed greenland, a six-minute drive from downtown Bentonville.

“With Format in Oz, we’ve tried to capture all the things that make Northwest Arkansas one of the fastest-growing and most dynamic ecosystems in the country—unparalleled access to outdoor recreation, accessible art everywhere you turn, and a culture of innovation as boundless and wild as the Ozark mountains,” said Olivia Walton, chair of Crystal Bridges and Momentary Board.
