Honeypot To Debut During Jazz Fest With Members Of Disco Biscuits, Revivalists, Lotus, More

62

On Friday, May 6th, New Orleans’ The Maison will bear witness to the debut of a new musical collaboration, Honeypot. Featuring members of The Disco BiscuitsThe RevivalistsLotus, and Pretty Lights Live, the supergroup will play its first-ever concert ahead of a star-studded set from Star Kitchen [get tickets].

The roster for Honeypot includes keyboardist Aron Magner (The Disco Biscuits), bassist George Gekas (The Revivalists), guitarist Tim Palmieri (Lotus), and drummer Alvin Ford Jr. (Pretty Lights Live, Dumpstaphunk). It’s impossible to say what will transpire at Honeypot, as this will mark the group’s first performance. But what fans can expect is a musical melting pot as stylistically diverse as New Orleans itself, especially during Jazz Fest.

“Honeypot is going to be a blast for the audience,” Gekas told Live For Live Music. “The approach is to keep the music relatively open and expansive. Deep-pocketed grooves featuring group improvisation instead of solos, peppering in familiar tunes and some surprises to act as jam vehicles. The plan is to throw a hell of a dance party.”

Keyboardist Aron Magner brings with him over a quarter-century of livetronica experience as a founding member of The Disco Biscuits, as well as forays into jazz with his instrumental trio SPAGA, and the recent re-emergence of Billy & The Kids. Magner and Gekas first connected following a run of shows with Matt Butler‘s Everyone Orchestra in Charleston, SC. That total improvisational immersion in EO is what helped pave Gekas’ path to Honeypot.

“When George called me, I immediately said yes,” Magner said. “It’s almost a mantra of Everyone Orchestra. And an ethos of improvisation. Sure we’re going into this with some musical tools to set us up for success, as well as faith in each other’s musical abilities. But ‘yes’ is probably the biggest one.

Tim Palmieri recently ascended the limelight as the new lead guitarist for Lotus following the departure of founding member Mike Rempel last summer. Prior to that, Palmieri served as a pillar of the Connecticut jam scene with his work in Kung Fu.

Bringing some more traditional NOLA flavor to the pot is Gekas. With The Revivalists’ indie-funk rock style, Gekas has delivered the swamp grooves to theaters and concert halls around the country. When not playing with The Revivalists, he also shares the stage with Pretty Lights Live drummer Alvin Ford Jr. in the funk outfit Pocket Protection. Though they both share an affinity for boogie music—with Ford also having served as drummer for Dumpstaphunk—the Honeypot show will see Ford lean on his livetronica experience, per Gekas.

“Musically the idea should be to keep everyone moving,” Gekas said. “Have a good time on stage with each other allowing the crowd to feed off that energy. Not focusing on certain styles or genres specifically. Let everything happen organically, which to me is the spirit of late-night Jazz Fest shows.”

This all-star debut will set the stage for Star Kitchen’s headlining set, featuring appearances from The Horn Section, the plug-and-play three-piece horns comprised of Josh SchwartzGreg Sanderson, and Chris Brouwers. They will be joined by their former Turkuaz bandmate Shira Elias, who will provide additional vocals to Star Kitchen bassist Marc Brownstein, drummer Marlon Lewis (Lauryn Hill, John Legend), guitarist Danny Mayer (Eric Krasno Band), and keyboardist Rob Marscher (Addison Groove Project, Matisyahu).

“After a dormant Jazz Fest for the past two years, it’s not lost on any of us how fortunate we are to share in these experiences,” Magner observed. “Where I can get a ‘let’s put a band together’ call that fluently evolves into a show in such a special city, during such a vibrant time, in front of such a wasted and joyous crowd. All simultaneously emitting and receiving ‘YES!’”
