Jack White Marries Olivia Jean At Tour Opener In Detroit

Jack White married his girlfriend Olivia Jean during the encore of his concert last night in his hometown of Detroit. The sold-out show at the Masonic Temple Theatre kicked off White’s Supply Chain Issues Tour in support of his new solo album, Fear Of The Dawn, which was released yesterday.

Friday also saw White play “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the Detroit Tigers’ opening day Major League Baseball game at Comerica Park.

White’s concert at the Masonic Temple Theatre began with the live debuts of two songs from Fear Of The Dawn, “Taking Me Back” and the title track. The show also featured the live debut of “Love Is Selfish,” which appears on a second solo album White will issue later this year, Entering Heaven Alive. The setlist drew from White’s solo album Blunderbuss with “Love Interruption” and from Lazaretto via its title track.

The set contained a rarely played cover of U2’s “Love Is Blindness,” purportedly White’s first time since 2012. He offered takes on “I Cut Like A Buffalo” by his band The Dead Weather and “You Don’t Understand Me” by his other band The Raconteurs.

Material from White’s former band The White Stripes made up the bulk of the latter part of the set. The guitarist worked through such favorites as “We’re Going to Be Friends,” “I’m Slowly Turning Into You,” and “Ball and Biscuit” which was dedicated to The White Stripes drummer Meg White.

The set ended with The White Stripes’ “Hotel Yorba.” Mid-song, White proposed to his girlfriend, fellow singer-songwriter Olivia Jean, who accepted his proposal. At the start of the encore, White emerged with Jean as well as her father, White’s mother and Ben Swank, an ordained minister who oversaw the nuptials.

Following the wedding, White and his bandmates ripped through “Steady, as She Goes” by The Raconteurs and the anthemic White Stripes classic “Seven Nation Army.”
