The Disco Biscuits Break Out ‘Chemical Warfare Brigade’ At Capitol Theatre

The Disco Biscuits finally kicked off a run at The Capitol Theatre on Thursday that was originally scheduled for March of 2020 but was postponed for two years due to the pandemic. Last night’s first of three concerts at the Port Chester, New York venue began with the jamtronica pioneer’s first “Chemical Warfare Brigade” in over six years as part of a setlist heavy on classics.

“We’ve been waiting a long time to play these shows,” bassist Marc Brownstein exclaimed before the band launched into “Chemical Warfare Brigade.” Last performed on February 4, 2016, “Chemical Warfare Brigade” was penned by Brownstein for his rock opera of the same name. The rarity featured plenty of shredding from guitarist Jon Gutwillig and was left unfinished as it flowed into “Once The Fiddler Paid.”

Last night’s first set continued with an expansive standalone “House Dog Party Favor” spanning 20 minutes. The Disco Biscuits closed out a set featuring material debuted between 1998 and 2000 by working “Munchkin Invasion” into “Story Of The World.”

The quartet opened Thursday’s second set at The Cap with “Hot Air Balloon,” the title track from Gutwillig’s rock opera. Bisco patiently jammed on a deep grove that eventually gave way to a rock-heavy “Shem-Rah Boo.” Next came an inverted “Portal To An Empty Head,” which with its live debut presented in 2009 was the “newest” song played last night. “The Great Abyss” emerged out of “Portal To An Empty Head” and bled into the end of “Shem-Rah Boo” to end the frame. Brownstein, Gutwillig, keyboardist Aron Magner and drummer Allen Aucoin went on to treat fans to an extended “Home Again” encore.
