Ween Plays Partial Lynyrd Skynyrd Cover In Austin

Ween performed at the Moody Amphitheater in Austin, Texas on Thursday night. The band began the evening’s encore with an unplanned and incomplete performance of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Gimme Three Steps.”

Ween delivered a 31-song main set in Austin, kicking off with the year’s first “Strap on That Jammy Pac.” The only other song making its 2022 debut was “Slow Down Boy,” which came in the middle of the set. Ween played the short rarity “Can U Taste the Waste?” three consecutive times on Thursday night. The set closed with “She Wanted to Leave.”

Ween returned to the stage to initiate the encore. While tuning up, frontman Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman thanked the Austin audience for being “amazingly brown and beautiful,” while commenting about a “chocolate mesquite sunrise.”

While Gener was talking, guitarist Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo started playing the riff to Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Gimme Three Steps.” Gener then asked what was next, as drummer Claude Coleman Jr., bassist Dave Dreiwitz and keyboarist Glenn McClelland joined Deaner in loosely picking up the Skynard classic.

“Just don’t tell anybody that ever happened,” Deaner said after concluding the partial “Gimme Three Steps” cover.

The rest of the encore consisted of “Touch My Tooter,” “The Stallion pt 1,” “Polka Dot Tail” and “Your Party.” Tonight, Ween begins a two-night stand in New Orleans. Watch The Stallion Mang’s audience-captured video of Thursday’s Ween show in Austin below:
