Pearl Jam honored late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins by debuting
a cover of “Cold Day In The Sun” on Saturday during their second of two concerts at The Forum near Los Angeles. Drummer Matt Cameron handled lead vocals on the Hawkins-sung Foo Fighters classic, which saw the band augmented by Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith on tambourine and Cameron collaborator Mark Guiliana on drums.
“Probably the most important [people] were thinking about tonight [are] all the family and friends of Mr. Taylor Hawkins,” Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder explained to the audience regarding Taylor Hawkins’ tragic death in Bogotá, Colombia on March 25. Eddie went on to discuss the pain of losing Hawkins:
“It’s never easy when you lose someone. As you get older, you’ll notice it starts happening more and more. It’s just where you are in the timeline and where your friends are in the timeline. But sometimes like this, it’s so unexpected, but also, it makes it harder because he was someone who truly, truly loved living life on this planet. So, I guess the one thing we can be consoled by is the fact that he never wasted a moment, and he did live his life to the fullest. We just want more of it.”
Vedder on behalf of Pearl Jam sent his love to Hawkins’ family. Eddie then revealed what the band had in store. “Matt Cameron, who was very close with Taylor, he had a tremendous idea to play a Taylor song and he’s also asked his friend, the incredible drummer, another Bowie connection, Mr. Mark Guiliana to play some drums while Mr. Matt Cameron takes over the microphone,” Eddie said in introducing the “Cold Day In The Sun” performance.
Taylor Hawkins wrote “Cold Day In The Sun” in 2001 and Foo Fighters included the song on their 2005 studio album, In Your Honor. Hawkins would often lead Foo Fighters in performing “Cold Day In The Sun” live between 2005 and 2018. Pearl Jam’s version came in the middle of their 24-song concert at The Forum last night.
Eddie Vedder took the stage to start the evening with a solo cover of Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers” before a set from Josh Klinghoffer as Pluralone. Pearl Jam then opened with their first “Release” since September 2, 2018. Other tour debuts played last night during the band’s main set were “Low Light,” “Take The Long Way,” “Immortality,” “Unthought Known,” “Glorified G,” “Lukin,” “I Believe In Miracles,” “Garden” and “Mind Your Manners.”
“Better Man” kicked off Pearl Jam’s six-song encore last night. The pairing of “Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town” and “Jeremy” followed before Vedder and company performed “Leash,” “Alive” and “Indifference” to close out the concert and two-night stand.
