Trey Anastasio Band Performs +20-Minute ‘Everything’s Right’ At Red Rocks

53

Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio brought the Trey Anastasio Band back to Red Rocks outside Denver last night to close their spring tour. The octet kicked off Sunday’s second set at the iconic Morrison, Colorado venue with an adventurous “Everything’s Right” that spanned over 20 minutes.

Last night marked TAB’s seventh concert at Red Rocks since making their debut at the venue on July 17, 2001 and first since May 31, 2017. Anastasio, drummer Russ Lawton, bassist Dezron Douglas, percussionist Cyro Baptista, keyboardist Ray Paczkowski, trumpeter Jennifer Hartswick, trombonist Natalie Cressman and saxophonist James Casey opened the concert with “Set Your Soul Free” and then worked through the instrumental “Olivia” before delivering a horn-driven take on the Phish classic “Camel Walk.”

Sunday’s first set continued with the languid “Love Is What We Are,” a particularly funky “The Moma Dance” and the blues-tinged “Dark And Down.” The Trey Anastasio Band presented a run of oldies — “Alive Again,” “Money, Love And Change” and “Sand” — to cap the frame.

The Trey Anastasio Band took “Everything’s Right” deep to get the second set underway. Anastasio shredded through the lengthy jam as Paczkowski added powerful Clavinet riffs underneath and Lawton, Baptista and Douglas provided a strong groove. The guitarist utilized an auto-wah effect towards the end of the patient improvisation. Next up was “No Men In No Man’s Land,” which gave way to a “Liquid Time” that bled into the second live “Roll Like A River.” The song from Trey’s Mercy album was followed by the tour’s first “Quantegy” before “Simple Twist Up Dave” brought the seamless run to a conclusion.

James Casey shined on the ensuing “Night Speaks To A Woman,” while Hartswick and Paczkowski were featured on the day-appropriate “Ether Sunday.” TAB then went with “Gotta Jibboo” to close the evening’s second set. For the encore, the eight-piece paired “A Life Beyond The Dream” and “First Tube” to put an exclamation point on the night at Red Rocks and brief spring tour.
