Fast-rising jazz futurists DOMi & JD Beck played four sold-out shows over two days at New York’s famed Blue Note Jazz Club as part of Blue Note Jazz Festival this week. The talented youngsters have taken the music world by storm since meeting through Snarky Puppy and Ghost-Note drummer Robert Sput Searight. They recently released their debut single, “SMiLE”, via Blue Note Records and Anderson .Paak‘s Apeshit label.
Though still too young to sit at the venue’s bar, the dynamic duo had no problem filling the historic club four times over for an early and late show two nights in a row. With only one song released, they played a mix of mind-bending originals and jazzed out interpretations of songs including the Flintstones theme, J Dilla‘s “Dillatronic 23”, John Coltrane‘s “Giant Steps”, Jaco Pastorius‘s “Havona”, a medley of songs from MF Doom and Madlib‘s Madvillain collaboration that also included Knxwledge‘s “tm_s not promised”, and a version of “My Favorite Things” dubbed “My Favorite Ballsack”. Many of the unreleased songs likewise received cheeky impromptu titles, including the supposed title track from the band’s forthcoming album, “Pussy With Balls”.
“That’s not what it’s called, but we can’t tell you so it’s a good working title, right?” Beck teased.
Friend, collaborator, and mentor of the band Anderson .Paak was on hand to enjoy one of the duo’s performances on June 1st. In addition to being signed to .Paak’s label, DOMi & JD Beck co-wrote “Skate” on his GRAMMY-winning album with Bruno Mars as Silk Sonic. Robert Glasper was also in the audience, having kicked off Blue Note Jazz Festival with a free show in Washington Square Park that was cut short due to inclement weather earlier in the evening.
