Pearl Jam Covers The Rolling Stones’ ‘Street Fighting Man’ At Pinkpop

225

Pearl Jam covered The Rolling Stones’ “Street Fighting Man” for the first time in 28 years during their set on Saturday at the Pinkpop Festival in the Netherlands. The bust out came during the encore of their headlining performance at Megaland in Landgraaf.

Pearl Jam delivered a 17-song main set that judiciously pulled from throughout the band’s career, including five from their 1991 debut album, Ten and three off their most recent LP, 2020’s Gigaton. The band broke up the set with a cover of Neil Young’s “Throw Your Hatred Down” and also offered a take on “Sleeping by Myself” from frontman Eddie Vedder’s solo work.

The latter part of the set saw “Daughter” incorporate elements of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick In The Wall Part 2” and a bit of Crowded House’s “Don’t Dream It’s Over” used as an introduction to “Better Man,” which was tagged with The Beat’s “Save It For Later.” Vedder spoke to the audience about his notorious stagediving experience at Pinkpop 1992 while footage of the event was shown on screens behind him. Vedder talked about climbing onto the camera crain to crowd surf with the help of the cameraman Rob van Rijn, who was brought out on stage and also briefly addressed the audience, calling Vedder “the nicest artist I know.”

The encore began with a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb.” Pearl Jam then played “Street Fighting Man” for the just the third time, its only two prior appearances coming on March 7 and on March 25, 1994. The Rolling Stones originally released the song on their 1968 album Beggars Banquet. Pearl Jam’s Pinkpop headlining performance ended with the Ten favorite “Alive.”
