Goose – Dripfield

Goose released their new studio album entitled Dripfield. The record is the Connecticut-based quintet’s third full length studio effort, and follows their 2021 LP, Shenanigans Nite Club. The tracklist features seveal live staples, such as “Slow Ready,” “The Whales,” “Arrow” and “Hot Tea.” Other songs, such as the title track and “Borne” have recently entered the group’s live repertoire as well. The band — guitarist Rick Mitarotonda, keyboardist/guitarist Peter Anspach, bassist Trevor Weekz, drummer Ben Atkind and percussionist Jeff Arevalo — for the first time enlisted an outside producer to help craft the songs on Dripfield. Goose worked with D. James Goodwin on the 10-song release at sessions held at The ISOKON in Woodstock, New York.

“James was great,” Mitarotonda stated. “He really got us to think about our approach in so many different ways. I really liked re-working some of the stuff we’ve been playing for years and taking the material in directions I would have never expected.”

Jack Johnson – Meet The Moonlight

Singer-songwriter Jack Johnson is back with Meet The Moonlight. The 10-track Brushfire Records/Republic Records release marks Jack’s eighth studio album and first full-length LP since 2017’s All The Light Above It Too. Johnson tapped Blake Mills to produce Meet The Moonlight, which was recorded during sessions held at Sound City and EastWest in Los Angeles as well as at Jack’s The Mango Tree facility in Hawaii. Mills contributed fretless guitar, Moog synth, steel drums and more to the record.

“When Blake and I first got in touch we’d send each other playlists, and over time we realized we were drawn to music that sounds effortless despite all the effort put into making it,” explained Johnson of working with Blake Mills on Meet The Moonlight. “After a while we got a language together and I gained a trust in him that allowed me to let go, push outside my comfort zone, and get to a sound I really loved.”

Peter Rowan – Calling You From My Mountain

Legendary singer-songwriter Peter Rowan returns with Calling You From My Mountain today, his second release on Rebel Records following 2018’s Carter Stanley’s Eyes, a tribute to the titular bluegrass great. Like his previous record, Calling You From My Mountain is also an homage, this time to country legend Hank Williams. Along with his touring band, Rowan also brought in some of bluegrass’ young and rising stars to guest on the record including Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, Lindsay Lou and Shawn Camp. A tribute to Williams was in the making but then the pandemic hit and Rowan decamped to his home in California where the landscape inspired reflection and informed a new set of songs. Marrying his work on the Williams tribute with his newfound outlook in Califonia, Calling You From My Mountain began to take shape.

“When I left Nashville in 1990, the only country music album I had, besides one Ernest Tubb record, was Hank Williams Sings Luke the Drifter,” Rowan stated. “So, I listened to that all the time on my little turntable, and I just loved that Hank had an alternate ego who was himself but the sentimental-songs-with-a-message side. I included one of the songs I wrote from the Luke the Drifter album, ‘Dream of Heaven.’ By doing that, I started to find my own voice again as to what I really wanted to say on this record.”

G. Love – Philadelphia Mississippi

Philadelphia-born singer-songwriter G. Love dropped a new studio LP, Philadelphia Mississippi, today via Philadelphonic Records/Thirty Tigers. G. Love (Garrett Dutton), tapped North Mississippi Allstars’ Luther Dickinson to produce Philadelphia Mississippi. Dutton has a history with the Dickinsons as Luther’s father, famed producer Jim Dickinson, helmed G. Love & Special Sauce’s 1995 album Coast To Coast Motel. The 13-track album features many special guests including Dickinson, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Cam Kimbrough, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Jontavious Willis, R.L. Boyce, Freddie Foxx, Speech, Sharde Thomas, Schoolly D, Chuck Treece, Trenton Ayers and Southern Avenue drummer/singer Tikyra Jackson. G. Love stated the following regarding the inspiration for Philadelphia Mississippi:

“I grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but I’ve spent my entire life steeped in the music of the Delta. So the idea that there was this whole other Philadelphia down there always fascinated me. For the last thirty years, I’ve wanted to make a pilgrimage—not just a musical one, but a spiritual one—to the heart of the blues, and that’s exactly what this album is.”

Soccer Mommy – Sometimes, Forever

The new Soccer Mommy album, Sometimes, Forever, is the third studio album released by singer-songwriter Sophie Allison. Released today on Loma Vista Recordings, the new release follows the last Soccer Mommy LP, 2020’s Color Theory. Allison worked with producer Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never) on the 11 songs that make up Sometimes, Forever.

“I didn’t want to make something super depressing without any sense of magic,” Allison stated. “Sorrow and emptiness will pass, but they will always come back around — as will joy. At some point you’re forced to say, I’ll just have to take both.”

Tim Heidecker – High School

Multi-talented Tim Heidecker focused on his formative years on his new album, High School, which was released today on Spacebomb Records. The comedian/musician recruited Fruit BatsEric D. Johnson, Mac DeMarco and Drew Erickson to co-produce High School. The co-producers also appear on the album, Johnson provided vocals, guitars, keyboards and percussion; DeMarco added guitar, bass, drum, percussion and drum programming; and Erickson played keyboards, drums and guitar. The 10-track LP was recorded at DeMarco’s studio. The song “Sirens of Titan” features Kurt Vile on guitar and “Stupid Kid” features piano by Jonathan Rado who also provided “spiritual guidance.”

Caamp – Lavender Days

Ohio rockers Caamp are back with a new album, Lavender Days, via Mom + Pop. The new record is the follow up to the band’s 2019 LP By & By. Growing out of the pandemic and a yearning for a simpler time, Lavender Days draws its title from “nostalgia” as frontman Taylor Meier put it. “It can summon up all of these incredible memories and transport you to those in-between days, which I think everybody remembers with more clarity than the big events.” Caamp began recording the new album in February 2021 at Sylvan Esso’s Durham, North Carolina recording facility Betty’s with renowned producer Brad Cook. The group brought in friends Nathaniel Rateliff and Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield to contribute vocals to the album. But when it came time to finish up Lavender Days, Caamp returned home to Columbus, Ohio to work with another lauded engineer, Beatriz Artola (Fleet Foxes, Adele, Sharon Van Etten).

“The past two years have been a big learning curve for us, especially since Caamp is centered on travel and human interaction,” Taylor continued. “That all got stripped away very suddenly. I lost my livelihood, then I lost a very deep love of mine. I lost my beloved dog. Then we all got Covid. You start to lose your sanity. I learned a lot and I humbled myself. I think I became more patient, and I know I became more vulnerable around my bandmates, my friends, and my family. Getting these songs to tape was a huge part of that process of learning and healing.”

Martin Courtney – Magic Sign

Real Estate frontman Martin Courtney shares his second solo album, Magic Sign, today via Domino. Following his 2015 solo debut Many Moons, the new record draws its title and inspiration from Courtney’s teenage years when he and hs friends would partake in that very teenage thing to do, wander aorund aimlessly with nothing to do. Courtney wrote the material for Magic Sign throughout 2020 and 2021 late at night while his wife worked hospital shifts and he stayed home with the kids. The singer-songwriter co-produced the record with Rob Schnapf at Mant Sounds in Los Angeles. While he performed much of the album himself, Magic Sign sees additional contributions from Matt Barrick, Oliver Hill, Kacey Johansing and Tim Ramsey. Courtney detailed Magic Sign and it’s lead single and opening track “Corncob”:

“The lyrics are about a specific time, the end of youth, pre-adulthood, scummy kid hanging around your hometown a little too long, smoking weed and driving around the surrounding area with your friends to get as completely lost as possible. Eventually getting home using these little green signs that are posted throughout the NJ suburbs telling you which way to go to reach different towns. We called them magic signs.”

Eric Clapton – Nothing But The Blues

Legendary guitarist Eric Clapton focused on his lifelong love of the blues on Nothing But The Blues, a new soundtrack out today on Reprise for a documentary of the same name that aired once in 1995. The 18-track collection features over an hour of previously unreleased live performances captured in 1994 while Clapton was touring in support of From The Cradle. The new soundtrack contains both blues standards and lesser-known blues songs. Nothing But The Blues also includes live versions of songs Eric recorded for From The Cradle such as “Motherless Child,” “Standing ‘Round Crying,” “I’m Tore Down” and “Have You Ever Loved A Woman.”

Kendall Street Company – Untitled California Project

Virginia’s Kendall Street Company issued their Untitled California Project studio EP today. The band featuring guitarists Louis Smith and Ben Laderberg, drummer Ryan Wood, bassist Brian Roy and multi-instrumentalist Jake Vanaman recorded the set with producer Joe Pisapia (David Crosby, The Monkees). Untitled California Project is described in press materials as, “a tongue-in-cheek rock opera inspired by both the culture and natural beauty of America’s golden coast.”

“I’m so happy we’re able to share [this] story through a visionary piece on the state of California,” noted Vanaman. “The project details a journeyman’s loss of innocence, and follows his epic jaunt through the heartland of America. Think of it like a musical theatre show.” Fittingly, Kendall Street Company makes their California debut tonight in San Luis Obispo.
