Toyesauce, the collaborative project led by guitarist Leon Toye, today issued a self-titled debut EP. The new release features contributions from many artists based around the country including in New Orleans and in Toye’s home of Nashville.

Toye recruited renowned New Orleans-based musicians such as The Meters bassist George Porter Jr. and drummers Stanton Moore (of Galactic) and Terence Higgins.

Sticking close to home, Toye worked with fellow Nashville-based musicians such as Dave Matthews Band saxophonist Jeff Coffin, violinist Joseph Shackelford, trumpeter Emmanuel Echem, trombonist Roy Agee, bassist Kenny Jackson, keyboardist Ryan Connors and a backing vocal trio consisting of Amber Woodhouse, Jannelle Means and Sarina-Joi Crow. Austin-based vocalist/guitiarist Kevin McKinney and North California-based bassist Craig Glaiberman were also tapped for the project.

“With Stanton Moore, George Porter Jr. and Jeff Coffin on this project, I’m humbled to even plug in my guitar,” Toye stated. “These guys are just the tip of the talent iceberg — an army of other incredible musicians are on this project, with sonic goodies all day long. I love surrounding myself with smarter and more talented people. It’s uncomfortable, but a motivating and fantastic learning opportunity.”

One of five songs on the EP, “I’ll Give It A Try” started in Toye’s Nashville home studio with saxophonist Troy Atkins. The track was then completed almost entirely remotely, giving Toye the opportunity to seek out Shackelford, Higgins and Coffin.

“’I’ll Give It A Try’ was written long ago, inspired by the spirit of Dave Matthews Band,” Toye told JamBase. “At the time I wrote it, I never imagined someone from DMB would one day play on it, which makes the title all the more fitting. A nice reminder that interesting things can in fact happen if we are not afraid to try.”

Toyesauce opens with the lead track “Yip Man.” The song features NOLA stalwarts Porter and Moore.

“[The] riff was written during the summer of 2020, while sitting on the couch and watching kung fu movies about ‘Yip Man,’” Toye said regarding the song. “At this point, Stanton had already played on two other tracks and we had a nice established workflow. The tune reminded me of a Meters groove and I remember thinking, it sure would be cool if George Porter Jr. played on this.’”
