Ween Busts Out ‘Bumblebee’ In Atlantic City

Ween performed their song “Bumblebee” for the first time since 2001 during their concert Friday in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The performance kicked off the band’s two-night run at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa.

Responding to an audience request, Ween busted out “Bumblebee” near the middle of their set, playing the short song for just the 12th time. According to Brownbase.org, “Bumblebee,” which appeared on Ween’s 1990 debut album GodWeenSatan: The Oneness, was last performed by the band on September 14, 2001, at a party celebrating the re-release of GodWeenSatan. Prior to that, Ween played it only 10 times between 1990 and 1993.

The show began with guitarist Dean Ween (Mickey Melchiondo) addressing the audience during a slowed-down, lounge version intro to “Take Me Away.”

“Hey, ladies and gentlemen welcome to the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa,” Deaner said. “I’m Dean Ween of the band Ween. Tonight, LiveNation — in association with Brown Dog Productions — is pleased to give you on drums Claude Coleman Jr., on keyboards mister Glenn McClelland, Dave Dreiwitz on the bass. At this time we’d like to bring out papa Gene Ween.”

“Thank you, thank you very much,” Gener (Aaron Freeman) said as he joined his bandmates onstage. “It’s a pleasure to be here tonight.

“We are Ween of New Hope, Pennsylvania,” added Deaner before the band fully launched into “Take Me Away.”

Friday’s concert in Atlantic City also included Ween’s first live offering of “Hey There Fancypants” since 2018. Other rarities in the setlist included “I’ll Miss You,” “I Don’t Want to Leave You on the Farm,” “Suckin’ Blood From The Devil’s Dick” and “The Rift,” the last of which featured The Dean Ween Group guitarist Bill Fowler sitting in.

Ween surrounded the rarities with staples like “Captain Fantasy,” “Touch My Tooter,” “Ocean Man,” “Fat Lenny,” “Tick” and others. Friday’s concert saw expansive takes on “Voodoo Lady,” “I’ll Be Your Jonny on the Spot” and “Laura.” Night one at the Borgata wrapped with a “Tender Situation” encore. Ween returns to the venue for another show tonight.
