Ween Covers CSNY’s ‘Ohio’ At Westville Music Bowl

81

Ween stopped by New Haven, Connecticut’s Westville Music Bowl on Thursday. The rockers dusted off their cover of the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young classic “Ohio” for the first time in five years.

Ween got things underway with “She Wanted To Leave” ahead of favorites like “Bananas and Blow,” “Piss Up a Rope” and “Learnin’ to Love.” The 14th “I Wiz Nothin” since its debut in 2000 followed, as per Brownbase. Ween continued with “The Stallion Pt. 1” ahead of the rarity “It’s Gonna Be (Alright),” which the band has only played 13 times since its debut in 1997. Chocolate and Cheese’s “Mister Would You Please Help My Pony?” followed ahead of two more songs that have made resurgences of late, “Mononucleosis” and “Little Birdy.” The band then bookended “The Stallion” suite with “Pt. 5” before stretching “Springtheme” to 10 minutes.

The classic “Roses Are Free” followed ahead of the relatively new tune, “Cornbread Red,” debuted last fall. The psychedelic “Did You See Me?” came next before Dean Ween (Mickey Melchiondo) took lead vocals on “Pandy Fackler,” which is usually sung by Gene Ween (Aaron Freeman). The band then offered two songs from 1997’s The Mollusk in the title track and the song that follows it, a particularly slow “Polka Dot Tail,” which contained a humorous tease of The Police’s “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic.”

Ween then dusted off their cover of CSNY’s “Ohio” nearly five years to the day they last performed in on June 10, 2017, at Thompson’s Point in Portland, Maine. Gener led the band through the song which included some crunchy guitar from Dean. The band continued on with “She Fucks Me,” “Help Me Scrape the Mucus Off My Brain”, “Frank,” “You Were the Fool,” “How High Can You Fly?,” “Spinal Meningitis (Got Me Down)” and “Buckingham Green,” which saw Gene stumbling a bit but laughing it off before Deaner got him back into the tune. Ween closed out strong with “The Final Alarm,” “I Don’t Want It,” “Transdermal Celebration” and “Your Party.”
