Jennifer Hartswick will release a new studio album entitled Something In The Water through bassist Christian McBride‘s Mack Avenue Music Group imprint, Brother Mister Productions on September 9. The trumpeter, vocalist, composer and longtime Trey Anastasio Band member previewed the record by sharing its lead single, “Only Time Will Tell.”
Hartswick began work on the nine-track effort during a writing retreat in the winter of 2021 with frequent collaborator and good friend Nick Cassarino at a closed bed and breakfast in her native Vermont. “We’d write and cook and write and cook and laugh and cry and write and cook,” explained Jennifer of the week-and-half experience that included lyrical input from songwriter Erin Boyd. “That was the purpose of the trip, to see if we could write an album.”
Sessions for the follow-up to 2018’s Nexus were held at Sound Emporium Studios in Jennifer’s current hometown of Nashville. Greg Magers mixed Something In The Water which was engineered by Joe Costa and mastered by Dan Shike. Hartswick, Cassarino and McBride are joined on the album by longtime collaborators drummer Conor Elmes, vocalist Celisse Henderson and keyboardist Rob Marscher. Other contributors include trombonists Natalie Cressman and Roy Agee.
Jennifer and Nick wrote about the good and bad that come in different phases of life. “We wanted to celebrate the human experience,” added Hartswick. “We wanted to write about all facets of love and life and loss and gain. There’s definitely an arc of someone’s life in this album.”
The album’s lead single arrived via an official lyric video. “‘Only Time Will Tell’ explores the story of a woman scorned,” Hartswick wrote of the LP’s opening track. “All too often we stay too long because it’s familiar, not because it’s good for our soul. The temptation to stick around will always remain.”
