Jim Avett Guests With The Avett Brothers At Red Rocks

The Avett Brothers welcomed Jim Avett for three songs during their Sunday night concert at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado. The acclaimed musician (and father of The Avett Brothers’ Seth Avett and Scott Avett) helped the group close out a three-night run at the venue.

Last night’s show was The Avett Brothers’ 31st performance at Red Rocks. The band first played the scenic venue outside Denver on September 14, 2008 as part of the short-lived Monolith Festival. Next, The Avett Brothers made their headlining debut at Red Rocks on September 4, 2010. Seth and Scott brought the group back to Red Rocks every year since with the exception of 2020 due to the pandemic. In 2014, The Avett Brothers expanded the annual run to three nights.

The Avett Brothers played 79 songs with nine repeats over the course of their Red Rocks 2022 run as per the Avett Setlist Database. Sunday’s finale began with the traditional “Black Mountain Rag.” The two-slot was held down by “Open-Ended Life” off 2013’s Magpie And The Dandelion, one of 11 different studio releases represented in last night’s career-spanning setlist.

A few songs later, Seth Avett went solo for “In The Curve” from 2007’s Emotionalism before Seth Avett treated fans to a solo take on live staple “Murder In The City.” Jim Avett initially emerged towards the end of the main set for covers of traditional songs “Take My Hand Precious Lord” and “Will The Circle Be Unbroken?” Papa Avett returned to get the encore underway with Townes Van Zandt’s “Two Hands.” The Avett Brothers then capped the concert and run with “No Hard Feelings.”
