Percussion ensemble Planet Drum featuring Grateful Dead/Dead & Company drummer Mickey Hart joined by renowned percussionists Zakir Hussain, Giovanni Hidalgo and Sikiru Adepoju released the official video for an alternate version of “King Clave.” The track appears in its original form on In The Groove, a studio album due out August 5th via Valley Entertainment. Planet Drum was supposed to kick off a two-night stand at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York on the 5th but the concerts have been postponed.
“Hi Friends! Our shows with Mickey Hart, Zakir Hussain & Planet Drum are postponed,” started a note from The Capitol Theatre shared on the venue’s social feeds. “Tickets purchased for Friday, August 5 and Saturday, August 6, will be honored on the new dates. Refunds will be available at point of purchase if you are unable to attend the rescheduled shows.”
New dates have not been announced as of press time. Planet Drum’s representatives responded to JamBase’s request regarding the reason for the postponement and stated no further information was available at this time.
Mickey Hart and Planet Drum made their return to the stage at the Frost Amphitheatre in Palo Alto, California on May. The concert with Bob Weir And Wolf Bros was the first Planet Drum performance in 15 years. “King Clave” closed the ensemble’s set.
In The Groove marks the third Planet Drum album following the ensemble’s Grammy-winning and chart-topping 1991 self-titled release and 2007’s Global Drum Project, which earned the group another Grammy. The six-track LP includes lead single “Tides.” Work on In The Groove began independently by Planet Drum’s members before they reunited in-person to complete the album.
“King Clave” takes its roots from a 6,000-person drum circle directed by Mickey Hart in 2004. Planet Drum worked with Playing For Change to prep the “King Clave” video. A press release noted the following about the song and visual:
“King Clave” is set to one of the most referenced and universally used rhythms called the ‘clave.’ The clave is the basis, serving as a skeletal rhythmic figure, around which various drums and percussion are played in most African, Caribbean, South American and New Orleans music. Created and filmed during the pandemic, the video is a cinematic feat as these extraordinary collaborations were done remotely. This was made more remarkable as Hussain’s brothers, Fazal Qureshi and Taufiq Qureshi, and Hidalgo’s father, Mañengue Hidalgo, also joined this unprecedented session in the midst of an international lockdown.
