Rising Appalachia returned to Salvage Station in Asheville, NC on Saturday for a hometown get down. The show from the new age folk group helmed by sisters Leah Song and Chloe Smith also featured support from Zydeco Ya Ya.
Asheville is one of Song and Smith’s trio of homes which also includes their original hometown of Atlanta as well as New Orleans. Saturday’s show marked Rising Appalachia’s second time at the local favorite Salvage Station in six months. The group played an outdoor show on an unseasonably warm December 18th, 2021.
In addition to music, Song and Smith share a passion for activism and announced during a show that a portion of the evening’s proceeds would go to Planned Parenthood, which was met with a roar of approval from the crowd. In a recent interview with Asheville Stages, Smith also highlighted their Slow Music Movement response to the fast-paced and often ecologically inconsiderate practices of the music industry.

“All the incessant travel and need to produce, the ticking clock that weighs artists’ value by how many tickets they sell and how big their tour bus is,” Smith said of the issue. “The Slow Music Movement encourages small town connection, sustainable travel routes, [and] local nonprofit outreach. It’s a way for us to dialogue with the industry about how we see ourselves in this work for the long haul.”
Saturday’s show was an all-ages event, with children under seven admitted free with a ticketed adult. The group made the evening an engaging experience for fans of all ages by employing the use of giant puppets that moved through the audience during the show.
