Father John Misty Performs With Colorado Symphony At Red Rocks

Father John Misty kicked off the North American leg of his 2022 tour with a special concert on Sunday at Red Rocks near Denver featuring The Colorado Symphony. The run comes in support of his recently released album Chloë And The Next 20th Century and opening night included performances of eight of the LP’s 11 tracks.

Father John Misty (Joshua Tillman) was joined by The Colorado Symphony and his band for the duration of his main set at the iconic Morrison, Colorado venue. Tillman went with the classic “Nancy From Now On” off 2012’s Fear Fun, his first album released under the Father John Misty moniker, to begin the show. FJM then looked to 2018’s God’s Favorite Customer for “Disappointing Diamonds Are The Rarest Of Them All” and “Mr. Tillman” before serving up Chloë And The Next 20th Century namesake “Chloë.”

Chloë And The Next 20th Century is an album heavy on orchestral components. Those sounds were emulated by The Colorado Symphony on performances of such tracks as “(Everything But) Her Love,” “Q4,” “Funny Girl,” “Kiss Me (I Loved You)” and “The Next 20th Century.” Father John Misty also played a handful of cuts off 2015’s I Love You, Honeybear with the orchestra including “When You’re Smiling And Astride Me,” “Nothing Good Ever Happens At The Goddamn Thirsty Crow” and “I Love You, Honeybear,” while 2017’s Pure Comedy was represented in the setlist with “Total Entertainment Forever,” “Things It Would Have Been Helpful To Know Before The Revolution” and its title track.

All told, Tillman led The Colorado Symphony through 20 songs at Red Rocks. He then was joined just by his band for an encore featuring I Love You, Honeybear gems “Holy Shit” and “The Ideal Husband” split with the beloved “I’m Writing A Novel.”
