Gov’t Mule Jams On ‘Folsom Prison Blues’ At Beak & Skiff Apple Orchard

82

Gov’t Mule continued their summer tour on Saturday with a concert at Beak & Skiff Apple Orchard in Lafayette, New York. The quartet worked an impromptu and instrumental jam on Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” within “Effigy” towards the end of the evening.

Guitarist Warren Haynes, bassist Jorgen Carlsson, multi-instrumentalist Danny Louis and drummer Matt Abts kicked off the concert outside Syracuse with a rare cover of Son House’s “Grinnin’ In Your Face.” The band last played the blues gem back on December 27, 2019 as per Setlist.FM. Live staple “Mule” came next before the four-piece looked to 2021’s Heavy Load Blues for “Wake Up Dead” and “Snatch It Back And Hold It.” The latter came complete with the “Hold It Back” jam section initially worked out in the studio.

Saturday’s first set rolled on with classics “Beautifully Broken” and “Rocking Horse.” Haynes then led his bandmates through the title track off 2017’s Revolution Come..Revolution Go and the Bobby “Blue” Bland gem “Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City.” Gov’t Mule capped the frame with the original “Time To Confess.”

Mule pulled “No Need To Suffer” from 2000’s Life Before Insanity to get last night’s second set underway. Oldies “Painted Silver Light” and “Thelonius Beck” followed. Next came the group’s recently debuted take on Savoy Brown’s “Street Corner Talking.” The quartet then delivered their stellar cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Effigy.” Haynes fronted a move to the aforementioned “Folsom Prison Blues” and simulated the lyrics on his guitar before closing out “Effigy.” Gov’t Mule last played the Johnny Cash cover at Westville Music Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut on April 30, 2021.

A pair of heavy rotation covers ended the second set, as Mule treated fans to their renditions of Al Green’s “I’m A Ram” and Tom Waits’ “Going Out West.” The band put an exclamation mark on the evening with a “Soulshine” encore.
