Dave Matthews Band saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist and composer Jeff Coffin shared the star-studded title track single off his upcoming album, Between Dreaming and Joy. The laid-back instrumental features an impressive cast of collaborators including Marcus King, Jennifer Hartswick, Keith Carlock, Stefan Lessar, and Buddy Strong.
The track opens with the sound of an ice cream truck passing slowly by. As the childish jingle fades into the distance, Carlock bursts in with a characteristically funky and spacious drum groove. Coffin’s bass clarinet and Lessar’s bass enter next ahead of King’s bluesy slide guitar. Hartswick’s layered background vocals meld with Strong’s organ to create a suffusive foundation that supports the main melody, which is played on a combination of clarinet, melodica, sax, guitar, and vocals. The slow-grooving composition shifts to a B section as Coffin transitions to flute for a short but sweet solo, which gives way to a longer contribution from King. The blues guitar superstar uses his slide to wail through the form before the band returns to the B section and closes out the tune with the main melody.
Slated for release on August 26th, Between Dreaming and Joy is the culmination of over two years in the studio. “It was the first instance in over 25 years that I had the time and resources to deep dive into my composing in a way that wouldn’t be interrupted by going on the road,” Coffin said. “I ended up with over 30 new tunes, I finished many older tunes and ended up with 6 or 7 full records to release.”
The album showcases Coffin’s composition skills and features a jaw-dropping roster of collaborators including Michael League, Robben Ford, Nigel Hall, Kris Myers, DJ Logic, Bob Lanzetti, Jordan Person, Felix Pastorius, Chester Thompson, Bernardo Aguiar, Sarah Ariche, Jeff Babko, Mike Baggetta, Vicente Archer, Chris Wood, Bill Fanning, Alana Rocklin, Ray Mason, Emmanuel Echem, Chris Walters, Richard Aspinwall, Derico Watson, David Rodgers, Derrek Phillips, Jonathan Wires, and Tony Hall.
