Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia was born on August 1, 1942 and died on August 9, 1995 at the age of 53. Each year, the “Days Between” Garcia’s birthday and the anniversary of his death mark a period of time to reflect on and celebrate the beloved musician’s life and career. This year, JamBase honors the Days Between by examining the evolution of the Jerry Garcia Band from inception in 1975 through a final performance in 1995.

The Jerry Garcia Band was a creative outlet for Jerry Garcia, who often took the group – in its various lineups – out on extensive jams. JGB’s repertoire was largely made up of cover songs from a wide variety of genres and eras.

JamBase’s ongoing review of the Jerry Garcia Band for this year’s Days Between period continues with an installment of Saturday Stream featuring big jams performed by the group over its existence. The 25-song playlist presents many different iterations of JGB, from its initial lineup in 1975, to the classic lineup that was held together between 1984 and 1993.

The longest single track on the playlist comes from a show held on February 19, 1978, at Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium in Santa Cruz, California. That night JGB spent nearly 30-minutes covering Jesse Stone’s “Don’t Let Go.” The next longest track comes from the show the night before at Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium in San Rafael, California when they played Delaney & Bonnie’s “Lonesome and a Long Way from Home.” Both of those tracks feature the JGB Godchaux era lineup of Garica, bassist John Kahn, drummer Buzz Buchanan, keyboardist Keith Godchaux, and vocalists Donna Jean Godchaux and Maria Muldaur.

The original JGB lineup – Garcia, Kahn, drummer Ron Tutt and keyboardist Nickey Hopkins – can be heard taking The Rolling Stones’ “Let’s Spend The Night Together” out for a lengthy jam at the Keystone in Berkeley, California in November 1975. Garcia and Kahn can be heard on an acoustic rendition of the Dead’s “Bird Song” from a 1986 duo show at Marin Veterans.

Among the playlist tracks featuring the classic Jerry Garcia Band lineup – Garcia, Kahn, keyboardist Melvin Seals, drummer David Kemper and vocalists Gloria Jones and Jaclyn LaBranch – is a 15-minute cover of The Temptations’ “The Way You Do the Things You Do” from November 1993.
