Marisa Anderson Shares ‘La Llorona’ Single

59

Marisa Anderson shared a new single, “La Llorona.” The guitarist’s adaptation of the traditional Mexican folk song is set to appear on her upcoming album, Still, Here, arriving on September 23 via Thrill Jockey Records.

Anderson previewed Still, Here in July with the single “Waking” and now follows with “La Llorona.” Translated in English as “The Weeping Woman,” the folk legend of “La Llorona,” told in numerous versions throughout Latin America, is essentially the story of a wailing spirit who haunts waterways. Anderson shared her experience with “La Llorona”:

“I’ve loved this song for a long time, I don’t know where I first heard it. Like many traditional songs there are multiple versions, different origin stories. I’m indebted to Antonio Bribiesca for my version of “La Llorona”. He was an incredible Mexican guitarist, extremely prolific and strangely quite unknown. He does a great instrumental version of this song, and he also accompanied the singer Chavela Vargas for a long time. Dozens of people have recorded this song, Chavela’s later versions are probably my favorite.”
