Phish‘s third of three nights in Atlantic City started strong and only seemed to get better as it went. It was a fitting stop on a tour that seems, like one of the band’s jams, to build and build as it goes. If Sunday evening was a slowly swelling wave, it crashed midway through the second set, over a remarkable 43 minutes that paired one of the newest Phish songs, “A Wave of Hope,” with one of the oldest ones, “You Enjoy Myself.”
“Wolfman’s Brother” set the tone for the evening, opening a show for the first time since June 29, 2016. A must-hear “Tube” showed up next; weaving between major and minor keys, the jam was everything you can hope for in the two-slot. It’s not every show that the band rocks hard enough in the first two songs that fans need a breather for the third. But such was the first quarter of Sunday night’s gig, and Phish answered with the always-welcome “Mountains In The Mist.”
Guiarist Trey Anastasio‘s trills dotted a lovely mid-set “Ocelot.” A nearly spotless “Fluffhead” was then followed by a compact “Mercury,” which bypassed an extended jam in favor of a left turn into “Gumbo.” Trey reached into the upper end of his vocal range during “Gumbo,” and then kept going. New Jersey may be the domain of Sopranos, but this was taking it a bit far.
All was forgiven in the “Carini” that closed the set, whose vocals and jam alike were picture perfect: thanks in large part to Page McConnell’s stellar work on the synth, the jam covered a great deal of ground in just under 10 minutes.

The second set kicked off with an energetic “Mike’s Groove” that, while compact, included some sublime musical conversation between bassist Mike Gordon and Trey.
“A Wave of Hope” has had a phenomenal summer, hitting home runs its last three times at the plate. Sunday made it four. The jam was a collage of sound, as Trey seemed to enter a trancelike state as he layered one loop on top of another, as his bandmates braided the threads of a winding groove beneath him.
Without a pause, the quartet dropped into “You Enjoy Myself” — no easy feat. The transition out of the vocal jam into “YEM”‘s now-seemingly standard second jam was just as seamless, as drummer Jon Fishman powered a punchy syncopated groove. Trey steered the band into a major key, ushering in one of the weekend’s most powerful peaks. Coming out of a song that has enjoyed a long-overdue second wind over the last year, this version of “YEM” is a must-hear.
The adrenaline bled into the set-closing “Suzy Greenberg,” an extra-fiery version that included some vintage fretwork from Trey. The band returned to the stage for a classic encore duo, pairing the yin of “Wading In The Velvet Sea” with the yang of “First Tube.”
