Rusty Featuring Elvis Costello & Allen Mayes Cover Neil Young And Nick Lowe For ‘Fallon’

70

Elvis Costello and Allan Mayes recently regrouped as Rusty, which was Elvis’ first band, for an EP released earlier this year entitled The Resurrection Of Rust. Rusty appeared on Wednesday’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to play a Nick Lowe tune for the broadcast and also performed a medley of Neil Young covers as a web exclusive.

Costello and Maynes were backed by Elvis’ band the Imposters for both The Resurrection Of Rust and their Fallon performances. The pair initially joined forces on New Year’s Day 1972 when Mayes added Costello to the band. Elvis spent the next 12 months gigging with Rusty before embarking on his own career. Allan reached out to Elvis in 2021 and the musicians decided to reunite to enter the studio for what Costello described as “the record we would have cut when we were 18, if anyone had let us.”

Rusty performed The Resurrection Of Rust cut “Surrender To The Rhythm” at New York City’s 30 Rock as the song that aired on last night’s episode. The group recorded both “Surrender To The Rhythm” and another song penned by Costello pal Nick Lowe, “Don’t Lose Your Grip On Love,” for the EP. Additionally, Rusty mixed elements of Neil Young’s “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere” and “Dance, Dance, Dance” for a performance shared on the Fallon YouTube channel.
