The Infamous Stringdusters teamed up with Anders Osborne (North Mississippi Allstars) for a moving cover of Grateful Dead‘s “Black Muddy River”. The rendition of the In The Dark ballad arrives in the Days Between Jerry Garcia‘s birthday on August 1st, 1942 and the anniversary of his death on August 9th, 1995.

“Black Muddy River” serves as a musical baton race between the collaborators, with Stringdusters guitarist Andy Falco taking the first leg of the relay. Osborne later takes his turn in line, dutifully paying tribute to the immortal words of Robert Hunter in one of his last great compositions with Garcia. The Infamous Stringdusters noted in a social media post that the song was recorded in a single-day session at Esplanade Studios in New Orleans following the band’s 2021 fall tour.

Beyond the choir of singers, however, the cover’s strength is drawn from the instrumental core of the group. The expanded lineup touches upon the bluegrass influences that ultimately gave birth to the Dead back when they were Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions. A group like The Infamous Stringdusters covering Jerry Garcia is indicative not only of how wide-ranging his influence was but also how wide-ranging his influences were.
