The Mars Volta Confirms 1st Album In 10 Years & Shares Single

36

The Mars Volta will issue their first album in 10 years, The Mars Volta, on September 16. The duo of Omar Rodríguez-López and Cedric Bixler-Zavala also shared the single, “Vigil.”

The Mars Volta announcement continues the band’s return having released their first new music in a decade, “Blacklight Shine,” in June following their 2012 LP Noctourniquet. The new single also arrived with the band’s first tour dates in 10 years. The duo followed “Blacklight Shine” with a second preview, “Graveyard Love.”

Press materials for The Mars Volta noted:

The new album shakes loose some of band’s long-standing shibboleths, with only two tracks lasting longer than four minutes, and the dizzying, abrasive prog stylings of earlier albums absent. The Mars Volta pulses with subtle brilliance, Caribbean rhythms underpinning sophisticated, turbulent song craft. This is guitarist/composer Omar Rodríguez-López and singer/lyricist Cedric Bixler-Zavala at their most mature, most concise, most focused. Their sound and fury channeled to greatest effect.

As with previous singles, “Vigil” arrived with a short film directed by Omar Rodríguez López. Watch it below:

The Mars Volta has added dates in select cities due to popular demand. Check out their itinerary:
