Goose opened the Dripfield Fall Tour last night with the first of two shows at The National in Richmond, Virginia. After an incredibly strong summer tour, the band is beginning a 14-date fall tour ahead of their run with Trey Anastasio Band in November.
New to the stage last night was a Prophet-6 synthesizer in multi-instrumentalist Peter Anspach‘s arsenal, replacing the Moog Matriarch that had been a big part of the summer’s weird jams.
Taking the stage just 15 minutes after ticket time, Goose gradually started up the dissonant space intro to “Dr. Darkness.” An upbeat “Doc Brown” in the two-slot (always a good omen for a Goose show) gave way to an extended take on “Jive I,” featuring Peter’s impressive organ chops on full display.
Perhaps the highlight of the night came in the ensuing “Rosewood Heart,” a song that always seems to deliver. After a fiery and slightly outside-the-box first jam, the band quieted down and almost seemed to be segueing into a new song. The jam was far from over, however, as guitarist Rick Mitarotonda pushed the band into a blissful theme. Building into a jam not unlike the hallowed November 22, 2021 “Arcadia,” Trevor Weekz incredible bass lines propelled the quintet along — just enjoying the beauty of the space they had found and showing remarkable restraint from taking it to the screaming peaks Goose is known for.
The high-energy first set continued with the break out of Chick Corea’s “Spain,” played for the first time since April 16, 2016 (a gap of 462 shows and one of the biggest bustouts in Goose history). A choogling cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Green River” and a blazing “Jive Lee” closed out the first set.
For the second set, drummer Ben Atkind ripped into the signature drumbeat for “Flodown,” this rendition taking its time and building to a nice peak before getting to song proper. A hot “Into The Myst” kept the momentum going with an extra-mustard vocal ending from Rick before Great Blue cut “Pancakes” gave fans another dose of extended jamming.
Another multi-faceted improvisational journey, “Pancakes” gave percussionist Jeff Arevalo an opportunity to show off his new drum kit as the band blazed through high-energy themes.
A nice pairing of “A Western Sun” and “Arrow” closed out the second frame ahead of a “Honeybee” encore complete with Coach Jon Lombardi on rainstick.
Last night was an above-average tour opening show, and showed us a band with no rust to shake off after their month-long break. Over the next 17 days, the band will play 13 more shows that will undoubtedly continue 2022’s incredible musical growth for this band.
