Sleater-Kinney confirmed the October 21 release of Dig Me In: A Dig Me Out Covers Album commemorating the 25th anniversary of the band’s album, Dig Me Out. The group helmed by Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker posted Courtney Barnett’s version of “Words And Guitar” from the previously revealed album.

Released in 1997, Dig Me Out was Sleater-Kinney’s third album and first to feature former drummer Janet Weiss, who remained behind the kit through her departure from the group in 2019. In addition to Barnett, others who contributed covers to the 13-song LP were Wilco, St. Vincent, Jason Isbell & Amanda Shires, Margo Price, Low, The Linda Lindas, Tunde Adebimpe of TV on the Radio, Self Esteem, Black Belt Eagle Scout, Tyler Cole, Big Joanie and Nnamdï.

Brownstein and Tucker posted the below message:

The artists who appear on Dig Me In have not so much covered the thirteen original songs but reinterpreted and reimagined them. Through added layers or the subtraction of guitars and drums, they provide a new way into the songs. Fresh rage, joy, pain, reclamation, slyness, and longing. Other interpretations slow down or stretch out the songs, trading urgency for contemplation, weariness or even a hint of ease.

A portion of the proceeds from Dig Me In: A Dig Me Out Covers Album will go toward Portland LGBTQIA+ youth center SMYRC. Stream Barnett’s cover of “Words And Guitar” here:
