The Smashing Pumpkins will issue a new album, Atum (pronounced “Autumn”), in three parts with Act 1 arriving on November 15, Act 2 on January 31, 2023 and Act 3 on April 21, 2023 (pre-order). Frontman Billy Corgan and company previewed the 33-track record with the single “Beguiled.”
Atum follows Smashing Pumpkins’ 2020 album CYR. Around the time CYR arrived, Corgan — who produced the new record — spoke of working on its follow-up, noting that the yet-to-be-named Atum was a “rock opera” following in the footsteps of the band’s classic albums: 1995’s Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness and 2000’s Machina/The Machines of God.
In an interview with NME, Corgan stated that Atum is “set about 20 years in the future” from the previous installments and will call back to both Mellon Collie and Machina. “It’s basically the story of a character through three different iterations,” he continued. “In ’95 it was Zero; 2000 it was Glass; and this character’s called Shiny. It’s sort of a psychological metamorphosis of a character over a long period of time. So the character is far older at the beginning of the musical.”
Smashing Pumpkins released an album called Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun in 2018. Corgan further detailed Atum with NME.
“Like a lot of things these days, it has one foot in reality and one foot in a made up world. That’s how I’ve always treated the character. It’s based on a lot of autobiographical things. But there’s lots of things that are things I’m just interested in exploring that don’t necessarily have anything to do with me. I was doing my own version of a weirdo thing.”
Of the lead single, “Beguiled,” Billy said, “I do love the song; we’ve been practicing it in rehearsal ’cause we’re about to do a show in a couple of days. It rocks. It’s nice to hear it against all the other classic songs ’cause it holds up really well.”
