Goose hosted another high profile guest spot on Saturday night when the band shared the stage with Outkast’s Big Boi during their concert at Stubb’s Bar-B-Q in Austin. Big Boi, Sleepy Brown and DJ Cutmaster Swift collaborated with the Connecticut-based jam quintet on the Outkast classic “So Fresh, So Clean” to close Goose’s first set on Saturday.
Saturday’s show was an official Austin City Limits Music Festival late night performance. Goose opened the night with an “Echo Of A Rose” played a bit quicker than usual. Next came the second “Everything Must Go,” an original debuted earlier this month in Atlanta, along with an expansive “Red Bird.” Guitarist Rick Mitarotonda then led his bandmates through Jim James’ “State Of The Art (A.E.I.O.U.)” and a well-jammed “Animal” that stretched past the 15-minute mark.
“We’re gonna do something we don’t usually do,” multi-instrumentalist Peter Anspach told the crowd before introducing Big Boi. The Outkast co-founder, hype man Sleepy Brown and turntablist DJ Cutmaster Swift then fronted Goose on “So Fresh, So Clean” from 2000’s Stankonia. The 2001 hit was a Goose debut. Bassist Trevor Weekz laid down the song’s signature bass part while drummer Ben Atkind and percussionist Jeff Arevalo kicked out the beat. Big Boi and Sleepy Brown each rapped the verses and choruses, while Anspach showed off his dance moves and played synth. “Give it up for Goose,” Big Boi exclaimed after his second “So Fresh, So Clean” performance of the day as he played the song during his own set at the festival proper.

The five-piece kicked off Saturday’s second set with an improv-heavy “Creatures.” A cover of Fat Freddy’s Drop’s “Fish In The Sea” followed. From there, Dawes drummer Griffin Goldsmith took over Arevalo’s kit for a “Rockdale” featuring Jeff on guitar. Anspach then led the group through the beloved “Yeti” before Goose worked over “726” and ended the encore-less evening with an adventurous “The Empress Of Organos.” The quintet continues their fall tour tomorrow night in Kansas City.
