Bob Weir Reunites With Matt Kelly At Wolf Bros’ Warfield Run

61

Bobby Weir and Wolf Bros played a three-night stand at The Warfield in San Francisco with The Wolfpack horns and strings that started on Friday and continued through the Grateful Dead guitarist’s birthday on Sunday. Weir brought out old pal harmonica player Matt Kelly for most of the run and also welcomed Ramblin’ Jack Elliott for a song last night.

The ensemble featuring Bobby Weir, Matt Kelly, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, pedal steel guitarist Barry Sless, drummer Jay Lane, bassist Don Was, cellist Alex Kelly, violinist Matthew Szemela (subbing for Mads Tolling), trombonist Adam Theis, trumpeter Brian Switzer and woodwind specialist Sheldon Brown kicked off Friday’s show with a “The Music Never Stopped” featuring “Easy Answers” within. Matt Kelly has a long history of performing with Weir in Kingfish in the mid-1970s, as a co-founding member of RatDog and contributing to a number of Grateful Dead shows and albums.

Wolf Bros went without The Wolfpack for a run of “Bertha,” “Big River” and “Loser” in the first set on Friday before the horns and strings returned for RatDog gem “She Says” and Grateful Dead classic “Throwing Stones” to end the frame. Weir went solo acoustic on a cover of Little Feat’s “Easy To Slip” with Lane and Was accompanying Bobby to conclude the song. Bobby strapped on Jerry Garcia’s iconic Alligator guitar for a trio version of “The Winners” and played the axe for the rest of the set. Chimenti and Sless came back for “Althea” and then the full ensemble contributed to “Greatest Story Ever Told,” “Scarlet Begonias,” and an “Uncle John’s Band” complete with “Supplication.” Bobby Weir And The Wolf Bros then worked Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” into “Good Lovin’” to finish Friday’s second set with all musicians adding to the evening’s “U.S. Blues” encore.

Saturday’s show began with the core Wolf Bros crew on “Friend Of The Devil,” “Bombs Away,” “Mission In The Rain” and “Brown-Eyed Women.” It was then back to the RatDog songbook with the full ensemble for an “Ashes & Glass” that encompassed Roy Hamilton’s “Don’t Let Go” and a “Weather Report Suite” that bled into the oft paired “Let It Grow.” Weir & Wolf Bros got Saturday’s second set underway with Kris Kristofferson’s “Me & Bobby McGee” and an “I Need A Mircle” that flowed into a “Truckin’” featuring “Smokestack Lightning” in its midst. The Wolfpack added to the “Truckin’” segment as well as the “Corinna,” “All Along The Watchtower” and “Playing In The Band” that followed.

Next, Bobby led Wolf Bros through the geographically-appropriate “Standing On The Moon” with its “Somewhere in San Francisco” lyric before the rest of the ensemble returned for a “Playin’ Reprise,” “One More Saturday Night” and encore of “Ripple.”

Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros got Sunday’s birthday show underway with “Samson & Delilah” and “Ramble On Rose” before the group served up “Big Boss Man” for the first time. Ramblin’ Jack then emerged to duet with Weir on “Mule Skinner Blues (Blue Yodel No. 8).” The rest of the set saw Weir, Wolf Bros, The Wolfpack and Kelly perform “Looks Like Rain,” the Wolf Bros debut of “Victim Or The Crime,” the first half of “The Other One” and “Cassidy.”

A cake was presented to Bobby in honor of his 75th birthday before all of the musicians treated fans to a “China Cat Sunflower”/”I Know You Rider” to open the final set of the run with Weir back on Alligator. The paired down Wolf Bros then offered “Peggy-O” before the horns and strings returned for “New Speedway Boogie,” “Eternity,” the end of “The Other One,” “Days Between” and “Not Fade Away.” Jeff Chimenti laid down a gorgeous piano solo to connect “The Other One” and “Days Between.” Last night’s show concluded with a “Shakedown Street” encore after Bobby led the crowd in “Happy Birthday To You” honoring his Dead & Company bandmate John Mayer.
