The word “Carrera” is most often associated first with the Porsche 911 and then Tag Heuer’s motorsport-inspired range of watches. So in honor of the German automaker’s 50th anniversary, the Swiss luxury watchmaker is using its racy chronograph to honor the very first Porsche 911 to bear the Carrera name.

Debuting during the tail-end of first-gen 911 production at the 1972 Paris Auto Show, the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7’s rallying roots were apparent in the presence of both a front and “duckbill” rear spoiler. It was the first street-legal ride to wear these aero bits, thereby begging customers to take it to a track.

A total of 27 colors were available, and Tag Heuer has chosen two for its limited edition watches: red and blue. The latter is used to accent the central hands, push buttons and shield logo of a 42mm Tag Heuer Carrera Chronograph with a white opaline dial.

A finely polished steel case, as well as rhodium-plated indexes and hands channel the car’s chrome pieces, while blue Porsche and Carrera markings distinguish a white fabric strap (a steel bracelet is also included).

The red version steps up the elegance with an 18K rose gold case and hardware, plus a red alligator strap with a solid rose gold pin buckle. The white dial is framed with a Guards Red circular line and features rose-gold coloring on the applied indexes, hour and minute hands, and permanent seconds indicator. Porsche’s red-hot signature color also adorns the seconds hand, sub-counter markings, and seconds scale on the flange.

The blue Tag Heuer Carrera x Porsche RS 2.7, limited to 500 units, sold out with a $7,750 price tag. But the red version, limited to 250 units, is still available to purchase for an eye-watering $23,550.
