Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: Elton John Performs Final North American Concert At Dodger Stadium

34

Elton John presented his last concert in North America on Sunday in front of a capacity crowd at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The renowned artist delivered a 24-song performance to close out a three-show run at the venue that included duets with Brandi Carlile, Kiki Dee and Dua Lipa

John has spent parts of the past four years touring the world for his “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour. Elton will retire from the road next year after shows in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Ireland and Europe.

Yet it was in North America where Elton John found his greatest fame and he celebrated a +50-year career last night. John famously performed at the home of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1975 and emerged towards the end of Sunday’s concert sporting a variation of the jeweled Dodger uniform he wore nearly 50 years prior at the same venue.

Elton stuck to a similar setlist as other stops on his farewell tour. He opened with “Bennie And The Jets” and made his way through such classics as “Tiny Dancer,” “Rocket Man,” “Candle In The Wind,” “The Bitch Is Back” and “I’m Still Standing.” He thanked fans on numerous occasions and pointed out the importance of the evening.

Brandi Carlile was Elton’s first guest of the evening. Carlile and John traded vocal duties of Elton’s 1974 hit “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me.” Kiki Dee emerged a few songs later for the tour debut of “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” her 1976 duet with John. Dee hadn’t sung the song with Elton John since 2006. Elton went on to close his main set by pairing “Crocodile Rock” and “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting.”

Last night’s encore began with Dua Lipa teaming up with Elton John for “Cold Heart.” Produced by Australian trio Pnau, the song was the lead single from John’s guest-filled 2021 pandemic album, The Lockdown Sessions. Dua was featured on the studio version for a cut that incorporates portions of multiple Elton cuts. “I can’t tell you how proud I am, at 75 years old, to have a No. 1 record around the world,” John exclaimed as Dua Lipa exited. He then noted the next song, “Your Song,” was his first hit.

Elton John wrapped up Sunday’s show with the fitting “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.” However, he took time before the finale to thank the crowd again. He then brought out his longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin and members of his family before starting the song.
“Be kind to each other,” Elton urged the audience as his final words for the “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” intro.
