Playing In The Terrapin Family Band: Bob Weir & Molly Tuttle Guest At Guild Theatre

32

The Terrapin Family Band brought out surprise guests Bob Weir and Molly Tuttle during their Thanksgiving Eve (Wednesday, November 22) concert at the Guild Theatre in Menlo Park, California. The ensemble featuring Grahame Lesh, Ross James, Jason Crosby and Alex Koford — best known for backing Phil Lesh at Terrapin Crossroads and elsewhere — was also joined by guitarist Eric Krasno at the Bay Area venue.

Both Krasno and Peter Rowan were announced as the band’s guests coming into the show. “We’re all super bummed that Peter caught the COVID and can’t be here,” Grahame Lesh informed the crowd at the start of the evening. “We did find somebody to help us out,” Grahame continued before Weir emerged to huge cheers from the audience. Bob Weir played with The Terrapin Family Band throughout both sets and the encore with the exception of one song on Wednesday. Ross James handled bass duties with Alex Koford behind the kit. Krasno and Lesh were on guitars as Crosby switched between fiddle and keyboards.

Bobby played electric with Grahame and Eric on acoustic for the “Cassidy” opener. Weir then went acoustic for the ensuing “Friend Of The Devil” before pluging back in for “He’s Gone.” Next, “Bird Song” took flight with Bob on lead vocals as he was for the majority of the show. Weir returned to acoustic for “Jack-A-Roe” and then Krasno pulled out his electric as he fronted the troupe on a cover of Jimmy Cliff’s “The Harder They Come.” The band ended the first set on Wednesday night with the oft-paired “China Cat Sunflower” and “I Know You Rider.”

The Terrapin Family Band featuring Eric Krasno and Bob Weir went electric for the second set at the Guild. Up first was “Terrapin Station” along with Disco Dead favorite “Shakedown Street.” The 33-minute opening sequence was followed by a loping “Scarlet Begonias” featuring tasty keys work from Jason Crosby. “Scarlet” came to a hard stop as instead of “Fire On The Mountain,” the group played “Samson And Delilah” next. Grahame Lesh then shined with effusive slide guitar on “New Speedway Boogie.”

Grahame Lesh advised the band had one more guest in store as Molly Tuttle took the stage. “I just flew home for Thanksgiving,” Tuttle said before adding she grew up in the area. Molly replaced Bobby in leading the group through “Standing On The Moon.” The Nashville-based musician recorded the song for her 2020 covers compilation …But I’d Rather Be With You.

Molly Tuttle stuck around the play guitar on a set-closing version of “Not Fade Away” that encompassed an Alex Koford-sung partial cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.” Weir returned for the “Not Fade Away” sequence and sang lead on the evening’s “Brokedown Palace” encore. Koford, Lesh, Tuttle and Krasno also chimed in with harmonies on the finale.
