Rodney Holmes Makes His Steve Kimock Band Debut On This Date In 2000

33

Guitarist Steve Kimock brought the Steve Kimock Band to the legendary Wetlands Preserve in New York City on this date in 2000. Not only was the concert an outstanding one, but it marked the SKB debut of acclaimed drummer Rodney Holmes. An exceptional on-stage recording can be streamed below.

Kimock and Holmes were joined in the band by keyboardist Tom Coster and bassist Bobby Vega. The show is filled with marvelous improv, which shows off the impressive skill sets of the individual musicians as well as the unit as a whole. SKB opened with “Kiss The Boo Boo” and “Baby Baby” before they worked The Meters’ “Cissy Strut” within “Poonk.” The audience then celebrated Vega’s birthday ahead of the group debuting “Ice Cream Factory,” a song which would later be known as “Ice Cream” and was penned due to a very cold backstage as per the taper’s notes. A transcendent 23-minute “E Flat Funk” and standout “Five Before Funk” brought the set to a close.

Kimock and company kicked off the second set with two of the best songs in Steve’s songbook: “Cole’s Law” and “Tangled Hangers.” The SKB then took “High & Lonesome” deep before fitting a jam on Jimi Hendrix’s “Manic Depression” and a Rodney solo within “You’re The One.” Later in the set, the guitarist would lead the troupe on a jazzy rendition of “My Favorite Things” ahead of the “Better Get Hit In Your Soul” set closer. “Rigor Mortis” served as the encore and brought the night to its conclusion.
