Billy Strings wrapped up his inaugural European tour at Galvanizers Yard in Glasgow, Scotland on Sunday. Billy and the band welcomed a trio of Scottish fiddlers to unveil geographically and seasonally appropriate Bill Monroe tunes and donned a kilt during the second set.
Strings and company — mandolinist Jarrod Walker, bassist Royal Masat, banjoist Billy Failing and fiddler Alex Hargreaves — launched the show with a substantial “Hide & Seek” off Billy’s 2021 album Renewal, stretching the interesting opener out to around 13 minutes. After “Watch It Fall,” the first set also saw Billy and the band embarking on an expansive three-song seamless sequence beginning with “Must Be Seven” which flowed into a massive “Pyramid Country.”
The band would find their way into a jam on The Beatles’ “Day Tripper” during the exploratory instrumental. Following the nearly 17-minute “Pyramid,” Strings capped the segment with “Ole Slew Foot.” After “My Alice,” the quintet closed out the first frame with a pairing of Renewal’s “The Fire On My Tongue” and “Know It All.”
The second set got underway with the favorite “Dust In A Baggie.” Billy then filled the first portion of the second set with a number of Renewal cuts including “Heartbeat Of America,” “In The Moring Light” and “This Old World” along with “Long Forgotten Dream” off Strings’ 2019 Grammy-winning album, Home.
In a little foreshadowing, the quintet reeled off “Fiddling Around” before welcoming local fiddlers Jerry Foreman, Laura Jane Wilkie and Lisa Pettigrew. With Hargreaves in the mix, the four-fiddle attack presided over the Monroe instrumental “Scotland,” a Billy Strings debut. The fiddlers would stick around to help Billy and the band dust off The Father Of Bluegrass’ festive “Christmas Time’s A-Coming,” last time played on December 21, 2019 for a total gap of 258 shows.
Strings and company closed out the second set with J.J. Cale’s “Ride Me High.” The quintet returned to encore with a fitting cover of Jimmy Martin’s “Tennessee” before heading back home to The Volunteer State.
