Swifties Sue Ticketmaster Over Taylor Swift Ticketing Fiasco

A group of Taylor Swift fans recorded their version of the Ticketmaster on-sale debacle in a lawsuit filed against the ticketing company. The plaintiffs in the case are 26 Swifties from across the country who allege Ticketmaster should be punished for the recent disastrous pre-sale for Swift’s Eras Tour that led to the cancellation of the tour’s general on-sale.

Set to take place at stadiums throughout the United States from March through August 2023, Swift’s Eras Tour will be the pop superstar’s first tour since 2018. A pre-sale for tickets took place on Wednesday, November 16 during which Ticketmaster experienced unprecedented demand, causing the website to crash and many Swifties left ticketless. Excessive ticket prices, both from Ticketmaster’s dynamic pricing and on the secondary market, reached more than $10K for some concerts.

Ticketmaster reported it sold 2 million tickets during the Eras Tour pre-sale. The company also wrote a lengthy blog post in response to the situation.

“[W]e want to apologize to Taylor and all of her fans – especially those who had a terrible experience trying to purchase tickets,” Ticketmaster stated. “Historically, we’ve been able to manage huge volume coming into the site to shop for tickets, so those with Verified Fan codes have a smooth shopping process. However, this time the staggering number of bot attacks as well as fans who didn’t have codes drove unprecedented traffic on our site, resulting in 3.5 billion total system requests – 4x our previous peak.”

In a since-deleted social media post, Swift responded to the “excruciating” Ticketmaster fiasco, stating:

“It goes without saying that I’m extremely protective of my fans. It’s really difficult for me to trust an outside entity with these relationships and loyalties, and excruciating for me to just watch mistakes happen with no recourse. I’m not going to make excuses for anyone because we asked them, multiple times, if they could handle this kind of demand and we were assured they could. It’s truly amazing that 2.4 million people got tickets, but it really pisses me off that a lot of them feel like they went through several bear attacks to get them.”

The New York Times reported the U.S. Department Of Justice opened an investigation into Ticketmaster and its parent company, Live Nation.

The lawsuit filed by Swifties alleges Ticketmaster sent an excessive amount of pre-sale codes, allowed non-Verified Fans to attempt to buy tickets, did not prevent bots from accessing the system, practiced unfair competition with its secondary re-sale platform and other illegal actions. The complaint seeks damages of $2,500 per violation.
