This Decision Keeps John Mayer Up At Night

68

John Mayer is featured on the latest episode of Spotify podcast Call Her Daddy. The Dead & Company guitarist discussed his personal growth, love life and much more with host Alex Cooper on the show’s first holiday special. Mayer also talked music including his answer to what keeps him up at night and ends the installment by playing a few songs.

“Metaphorically keeping me up at night,” the Grammy winner clarified to Cooper’s query before answering “Whether I should put out a whole record as my next release or a song at time. I can’t tell.”

“You put a record out you get a week. It comes and goes. You put a song at a time out, you get repeated shots. Repeated looks at the ball,” Mayer added. “So why wouldn’t you do that?” Alex responded. “I think I’ll probably put a song at a time out,” the guitarist stated and noted, “I’m not on a label anymore so that keeps me up at night.” John Mayer parted ways with Columbia Records in March after 21 years and eight studio albums.

In October, John Mayer shared an update from the studio. He mentioned at the time he would be announcing “some very exciting news about some new projects.” Mayer explained he goes to a recording studio everyday from 9 to 5. “I have a job. Without it, I would fall apart,” the Connecticut native added. John Mayer’s last studio album, Sob Rock, came out in July of 2021.

Other musical topics Mayer hit upon with Cooper were the experience of performing live, the genesis of “Your Body Is A Wonderland,” his songwriting process and more. The episode concludes with John Mayer playing solo acoustic takes on and in some cases discussing “Slow Dancing In A Burning Room,” “Why Georgia,” “Daughters,” “Dreaming With A Broken Heart” and “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.”
