Watch Lettuce’s Funky North Beach Music Festival Set Featuring Karl Denson, Skerik & Nikki Glaspie

25

Lettuce headlined the third and final day of this year’s North Beach Music Festival with a guest filled-set on Sunday in Miami. The funk outfit welcomed saxophone players Karl Denson and Skerik, plus drummer Nikki Glaspie over the course of their fest-ending performance.

Lettuce started off by mixing songs off their 2022 album Unify “The Lock” and “Hawk’s Claw” with “Sam Huff’s Flying Ragin’ Machine” and “Blast Off” (featuring elements of James Brown’s “The Payback) from 2008’s Rage!. The group then brought out Denson, who had played with Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe before Lettuce’s set, as well as artist-at-large Skeirk to join Lettuce saxophonist Ryan Zoidis and trumpeter Eric “Benny” Bloom for a double sax-assisted version of the Unify track “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright.”

After the horns exited, Lettuce dropped into “House of Lett” (with elements of “Always There” by Ronnie Laws) and then utilized “Boogie On Reggae Woman” as an instrumental intro to a pairing of Soulive’s “Break Out” and their favorite “Relax.”

Glaspie, who was onsite to perform with Trouble No More, then came out to add additional percussion to “Lettsanity” alongside Lettuce drummer Adam-Deitch. “Lettsanity” incorporated a jam on “It’s Just Begun” by Jimmy Castor Bunch. The stage was left to Lettuce for the remainder of their set which was capped with “Vámonos” and “Squadlive,” the latter infused with James Brown’s “It’s A New Day.”

Recorded by Adam at CheeseheadProductions, Lettuce’s North Beach Music Festival headlining set can be viewed below:
