Will Ferrell Sits In On Cowbell At His Son’s First Concert

What the Marvel cinematic universe is to a character’s origin story, rock history is to a first gig story. From The Velvet Underground playing “Heroin” to a high school auditorium to Phish getting drowned out by a cassette of Michael Jackson‘s Thriller at an ROTC dance, a band’s humble beginnings can serve as the start to a great legacy. Magnus Ferrell, son of Will Ferrell, got his live career off to a strong start on Saturday when he welcomed a sit-in from his dad on cowbell.

Magnus Ferrell’s first live performance was a set opening for The Psychedelic Furs at a charity event for Cancer for College. The charity, organized by Will’s former roommate Craig Pollard, raises college tuition funds for cancer survivors. Will has recently been engaged in the “Double Dog Dare You To Donate” fundraising effort where he will match any donations made to the organization through the end of the year.

Taking the stage at the Music Box in San Diego, Magnus Ferrell delivered a four-song performance that included a cover of Radiohead‘s “Creep” (unfortunately there was no “Don’t Fear The Reaper”). It was during Magnus’ original composition “Back in Place”, a forlorn piece of bedroom dreampop, that Will Ferrell emerged from the wings, cowbell in hand. True to his iconic Saturday Night Live “More Cowbell” sketch, he really explored the space—though luckily this time wearing better-fitting clothing.
