Dawg & Son: Watch David Grisman Join Sam Grisman Project In Seattle

28

Renowned mandolinist David Grisman performed publicly for the first time in nearly a year last night, when he made multiple guest appearances with his son’s band, the Sam Grisman Project in Seattle. Dawg took part in the acoustic segments of both sets at Tractor Tavern with his friend and longtime collaborator, guitarist Beppe Gambetta, also joining in for a song.

Sam Grisman Project features Sam joined by fellow core members Ric Robertson, Aaron Lipp and C.J. English. The Seattle show brought a West Coast run to a close and featured fiddler Alex Hargreaves (Billy Strings) who performed with the quartet at dates in Washington and Oregon. Sam and his band went electric to start Sunday’s concert for a run that included Jerry Garcia live repertoire staples “Catfish John,” “Gomorrah” and “He’s Gone” as well as a funky version of Dawg’s “E.M.D. (Eat My Dust)” and more.

David Grisman emerged as the ensemble went acoustic in performing a six-song sequence that began with “Dawg’s Waltz.” The opening tune of the first acoustic foray led into the elder Grisman’s “Opus 38.” Next came the title track from Jerry Garcia and David Grisman’s 1996 album, Shady Grove, along with takes on Jimmy Cliff’s “Sitting In Limbo” and the traditional “Down In The Valley.” Sam Grisman Project and David Grisman capped the set with “Rinzler’s Rag.”

The quartet and Hargreaves kicked off the second set in acoustic formation. David Grisman came back out after the opening pairing of “All About You” and “Hartford’s Real” to contribute to “When First Unto This Country,” a song he recorded with Jerry Garcia for 1993’s Not For Kids Only. Italian guitarist Beppe Gambetta then entered the fray for another Not For Kids Only number, Elizabeth Cotten’s “Freight Train.”

The focus on Not For Kids Only material continued sans Gambetta with the traditional “Jenny Jenkins.” Dawg stepped off for the ensuing “Blue Darlin’” but returned for a cover of John Lennon’s “Look At Me.” David Grisman’s final appearance of the night was followed by a set-closing “The Cloud” sung by Robertson and Lipp.

Sam Grisman Project featuring Alex Hargreaves ended last night’s concert and second set with another batch of electric songs. The band mixed originals and covers throughout including takes on Ric Robertson’s “Getting Over Our Love” and “Choices And Chains” as well as Aaron Lipp’s “You’ll Be Going Again.” Sunday’s second electric sequence also featured the group’s stunning version of the Grateful Dead gem “Black Muddy River.” For the encore, the musicians delivered Hunter/Garcia’s “Mission In The Rain.”
