Greensky Bluegrass opened a two-night stand at The Capitol Theatre on Friday, closing out the show by busting out an old Bob Dylan favorite. The first of two concerts at the Port Chester, NY hotspot featured support from rising Boston jam quartet Neighbor.
During its opening set, Neighbor paid tribute to late guitar luminary Jeff Beck who died on Tuesday at the age of 78. Midway through the seven-song opening frame, the band helmed by childhood neighbors Richard James (keyboards) and Lyle Brewer (guitar) debuted a take on “Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers”, taken from Beck’s landmark 1975 solo album, Blow By Blow. The band also squeezed in an instrumental rendition of the Grateful Dead‘s “Sugaree” before closing out with “Pine Tree”.
Making way for Greensky Bluegrass, the jamgrass quintet took the stage for a two-set headlining performance. The band showed off its range of influences by including covers of Bob Marley‘s “Small Axe”, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs‘ “Foggy Mountain Special”, and the traditional “Cryin’ Holy Unto The Lord (Rock Where Moses Stood)”. Giving some love to its latest album, Stress Dreams, Greensky spiced up the end of the set by welcoming Neighbor’s Lyle Brewer for the disc’s title track and Derek and the Dominos‘ “Keep On Growing”.

Returning for the second set, Greensky Bluegrass offered a concentrated frame of music by delivering big takes on “Living Over” and Keith Allison and Mark Lindsay‘s “Freeborn Man”. The second set came to a close with the most expansive jam of the night, a rendition of “Past My Prime” clocking in at over 15 minutes. Taking The Capitol Theatre stage once again, Greensky Bluegrass had one more surprise in store with a cover of “Forever Young” by Bob Dylan. Greensky had not performed the Planet Waves classic since January 31st, 2020, per Phantasy Tour.
