Among the highlights of last summer’s inaugural Sacred Rose Music Festival was the collaboration commonly referred to as “Philco” featuring members of Wilco performing with Phil Lesh & Friends. Official video footage of Wilco frontman/guitarist Jeff Tweedy leading the ensemble through his band’s “Via Chicago” was posted by Relix.
Sacred Rose made its debut August 26-28, 2022 at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois, which is about 15 miles from Chicago via the Stevenson Expressway. The Philco two-set performance took place on opening night of the event. Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh also tapped Tweedy’s Wilco bandmate, guitarist Nels Cline, for the headlining appearance.
Rounding out the Phil & Friends lineup at Sacred Rose was Lesh’s son, guitarist Grahame Lesh, saxophonist Karl Denson, guitarist Stu Allen, drummer John Molo, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and vocalist Elliott Peck.
Wilco, whose The Loft recording studio/headquarters is located in Chicago, recorded “Via Chicago” for their 1999 album, Summerteeth. Since performing with Philco, Tweedy and Cline have brought the Grateful Dead classic “U.S. Blues,” which was played at Sacred Rose, into the Wilco live repertoire.
