The Arcs returned on Thursday with a bright new single, “Sunshine”. The track is set to appear on the Dan Auerbach-led quartet’s highly anticipated sophomore album Electrophonic Chronic, out on January 27th via Dan’s Easy Eye Sound.
“Sunshine” comes to life with the chiming of piano keys, before the thundering timber of a riff reminiscent of Black Pumas‘ “Stay Gold” provides a balance of dark and light. Auerbach’s lyrics tell of desperate times as a bass undercurrent follows his vocal notes up and down the scale. In the chorus, the song bursts through into the light with the help of a youth choir before a closing crescendo brings the track home.
Electrophonic Chronic arrives eight years after The Arcs’ celebrated debut album, Yours, Dreamily,. Along with The Black Keys frontman, the band features Leon Michels, Nick Movshon, Homer Steinweiss, and the late Richard Swift. A celebrated producer, singer-songwriter, and one-time touring bassist for The Black Keys, Swift passed away in 2018 at the age of 41 following a lifelong battle with alcoholism. Swift is heard throughout Electrophonic Chronic, which was recorded sporadically since The Arcs mounted a 2015–2016 world tour behind Yours, Dreamily,. The new album serves as a tribute to their late bandmate.
“This new record is all about honoring Swift,” Auerbach said. “It’s a way for us to say goodbye to him, by revisiting him playing and laughing, singing. It was heavy at times, but I think it was really helpful to do it.”
