The String Cheese Incident paired with renowned multi-instrumentalist Sam Bush for a “The Sam Bush Incident” set on Sunday at Jewel Paradise Cove Resort in Runaway Bay, Jamaica. The collaborative performance included a handful of songs SCI hadn’t played in years and was followed by a set sans Sam Bush.
Sunday marked the penultimate night of The String Cheese Incident’s all-inclusive destination event in Jamaica. “Reach” began The Sam Bush Incident performance and was followed by Bush’s “Stingray,” which last saw action at a SCI show way back on March 11, 2017 as per Phantasy Tour. Sam Bush then led the sextet through “Revival” from his New Grass Revival days for the first time since December 28, 2018. A cover of Townes Van Zandt’s “White Freightliner Blues” followed before Bush and Cheese fit “Wheel Hoss” within a cover of Weather Report’s “Birdland.”
“Birdland” eventually flowed into “One Love,” a Bob Marley cover The String Cheese Incident hadn’t performed since June 13, 2014 — a span of 312 shows. SCI and Sam Bush ended the collaborative set with a pairing of Cheese staple originals “Rivertrance” and “Colorado Bluebird Sky.”
SCI kicked off Sunday’s second set with Song In My Head standout “Let’s Go Outside.” Cheese then jammed “Best Feeling” into another Bob Marley cover, “Exodus,” and back again ahead of a take on Peter Rowan’s “Sweet Melinda.” The first “Sweet Melinda” since November 2021 bled into “Can’t Wait Another Day.” The String Cheese Incident went the old-school route in closing the frame with classics “Johnny Cash” and “Desert Dawn.” An encore featuring “Joyful Sound” and “Rumble” capped the evening.
The String Cheese Incident returns to the stage at the Gem & Jam Festival in Tucson, Arizona on Sunday, February 5.
