Vulfpeck looked outside the sauna for inspiration for its latest single, a cover of the 1979 Bob Dylan classic “Gotta Serve Somebody”. The new rendition, labeled simply as “Serve Somebody”, appears on the funk outfit’s newly released album, Schvitz.

Vocalist Antwaun Stanley taps into the spiritual feel that pervaded Dylan’s Slow Train Coming, which the iconic singer-songwriter released following his conversion to Christianity. Stanley captures the gospel nature of the tune while the rest of Vulfpeck slaps its trademark funk groove underneath Antwaun’s captivating performance. Without Dylan’s lyrics, which at one point Stanley alters to reference himself (“You might call me Twaun, you might call me Ron”), this cover could easily be any other Schvitz song.

Schvitz arrived last week as Vulfpeck’s first album since 2020. The new album connects with the theme surrounding Vulfpeck’s set back in July at Levitate Music & Arts Festival in Massachusetts, the band’s first live performance since 2019. For the set, the band dressed in robes and hats seen throughout the album’s promotional music videos, with Theo Katzman even taking an ice bath at one point.
